I share a Verizon family plan with my parents/siblings. I have yet to break away from the plan because I'm only paying $45 a month. While reviewing our account today, I noticed a new line with an ipad 3 4g. I quickly check my data and sure enough, we're now on a 10gb share plan. This was all carried out by my clueless sister. What a fucking moron. Goodbye Google Music and Spotify.

I had to switch from VZ unlimited data to ATT 3GB. It wasn't too difficult, however I have noticed if I don't keep track I can get pretty close to the limit I have yet to go over, I just make sure to connect to WiFi when I can.

One more reason I love Virgin Mobile, I have unlimited 3G & 4G data for just $35/month (plus like a buck and change in taxes).

Is that really unlimited, or do they switch you to the 300baud modem after a certain amount of data?

I'll find a way to manage, but it won't be easy. She managed to blow through 1gb in a day. It's hard to even call her out on her stupidity because she is tech illiterate.

Recently they have claimed to limit your speed after 2GB but so far I haven't noticed it. I use a lot of 4G data and haven't noticed any slowdown. Even if they did slow you down, there is still no cap.

Mine's $25 a month - until I upgrade to a new phone.

Yes, I was on $25 but recently went to a new phone (Evo V 4G). I have been told if I call and gripe enough they will place me back on the $25 plan. Might have to try that.

Thanks. I don't have any kind of phone at the moment, but have been toying with getting an Android of some kind. It's not something I need, but would be nice to have on occasion. Whatever I get will definitely be prepaid, so I try to catalog people's experiences as i go, to make selection easier.

I was thinking about changing just for the free hotspot. I'm not a real heavy data user anyways.

Speaking of flat rate phone service, has anyone tried bringing their own GSM phone to Straighttalk? They are selling GSM SIM cards now. I have been thinking about the HTC One X (International) and using it with ST's unlimited plan.

If you do, please let me know whether it worked.

That phone is at the top of my list. Much more affordable than the iPhone.

So have I. Me and my wife use around 2GB a month combined. We could switch to the 4GB for a little less money or the 6GB plan for just a touch more.

OP: Time to either get your own plan or quite bitching. When you leach off a family plan you are not in charge of you, you are at the mercy of the account holder. Granted she is showing her brightness considering she could have just got a wifi iPad and tethered for free with the shared plan. You wold have still been screwed but she would have saved money up front and on the monthly fee.

I laugh every time I see a fool paying $40 for 2-4GB of data. The telecoms laugh all the way to the bank every time a new sucker signs up.

Hotspot is now free for everyone with a limited data plan. AFAIK Verizon can charge for using their hotspot service but they can't get you at all for downloading one off the market and using it instead.

4G is unlimited at the moment supposedly dunno when that is subject to change. So if you live in one of the cities where Sprint has Wimax you can get unlimited 4G from Virgin mobile for 35$/month. Speeds go up to 10Mbps but average 2-4Mbps.

Damn that sucks. After looking at my Google Music usage, I would never be able to go to any capped plan.

Yes there are tons of threads on these topics in our Mobile Devices section.

i wholeheartedly agree. it was like when they came out with text messages and charged people 10 cents for each one... when one minute of voice was the equivalent to a thousand texts and it was cheaper.

I'm comfortable with high limits for people who download way too much. Some people download 24/7.

Then again, this is surely a slippery slope. Need to cover expenses for more raises? Just cut the bandwidth cap no 1 will notice. Need to boost revenue for a quarter? Just cut the bandwidth cap so even more get hit with fees, no 1 will notice. Until the internet is way too expensive/restrictive.

When they introduced the cellphone while driving laws around here, I knew some people who were around 50 crying foul "They said that about seatbelts, now they can pull you over for that too but it wasn't supposed to be that way." Sure enough the delay between "Can't get pulled over for only talking on your cellphone" to "We pull over people for talking on their cellphone" was about 6 months. History repeats itself like nobodies business. Its crazy.

I wish we had unlimited data here for cells. The biggest plan is like 500MB. Funny thing is they just installed a brand new HSPA 3G network a few years ago yet we can barely use it. I laugh at the people who actually buy turbo hubs. That's the easiest way to give $100,000 or more to the phone company. Thankfully those accidental overuse bills usually get waved though, but it's still scary to see your bill read that, and after so many times they wont wave it anymore.
