that doesn't record in HD right? I'm sick of the comcast dvr, guess I'll be stuck with it for a long time.

Nope, analog only.

But it only cost me $134 AR and after 2 years I will save $478.80 in monthly fees ($19.95 x 24)

YOu need a phoneline with that correct Chief Ferengi

Yes and No. We only needed a landline for the initial setup call and after that we're using USB WiFi adapter which CompUSA had on sale for $45 - $20 MIR - $20 MIR = $5. We don't have a landline, so I had to bring it to a friends house to dialup to "the mother ship".

That doesn't really help when you want to record ESPN/HBO/etc. in HD.

$10/mo for Comcast Dual-Tuner HD-DVR...doesn't seem so bad now compared to the alternative ($800 + $20/mo)

I hate the interface for the comcast box. After you've used TiVo it just doesn't compare. :(

Good luck finding one. eBay and Craigslist should have a few.

They're selling for around $199 - $25 shipping on eBay:

Is your 400 sluggish ever since the kidzone update? Mine is alot slower after that update. Right now I would love to see TIVO go bankrupt, even if that means that my 400 would be unusable. It'd give me a reason to make a HTPC. I hate companies that screw the customer like they are doing.

Yeah it's a little more sluggish. Since it's connected to our Apex 13" TV, we don't watch it a lot. But it is handy in the mornings when we don't wanna fire up the 50" DLP. It's nice being able to pause live TV without needing a HTPC.

I'll be switching to my HTPC exclusively when my 1 year subscription runs out. Can't beat no monthly fee with better features than TiVo. :)

What exactly is so incredible about TiVo's interface? Is it all eye-candy, or something useful?

With the Comcast box, I scroll through the listings TV Guide-style, hit the Record button once to record a show, or hit is twice to setup a series recording. I'm not sure how something could be more direct or simple than that.

I've never found the TiVo interface to be anything special. It's annoyingly slow compared to my HTPC.

And this may be user error, but I can't find a way to go from watching TV to my recorded shows list with a single button push. I have to hit the TiVo button then hit select.

It's better than the Dish Network DVR I used to have, but I'll take my HTPC any day.

Well, Tivo service has only gotten MORE expensive, so the 12.95/mo contract for three years could work out in your favor.

Still, this is not good. It's only going to drive people away from Tivo and to cable company DVRs. I would have actually considered the series 3 Tivo if I could get it for $6.95/mo as an additional unit Now, if I only want a one year commitment, it would cost me more for a second Tivo box than it does for the first.

As it stands, when I upgrade to an HDTV, it'll be the cable companies DVR box for me. I hope the software side of things works out for Tivo, because the hardware side probably won't last two more years.

At least there is some semi-good news. There was a post on the Tivo Community forums taking beta testers for new software that's supposed to fix the slowdown problems introduced by the KidZone update.

It's not the eye candy. For something as simple as creating a series recording it is a huge pain on the comcast box compared to TiVo.

First you have to dig deep to search for a show by name. Then after you've gotten to the screen with the 5 boxes of letters above, you have to scroll through the alphabet one by one. By comparison TiVo looking for a show in 1 level deep from the main menu and gives you an onscreen keyboard to search for shows.

Other little things, off the top of my head. If I'm watching a 2 hour recorded show but want to jump to the middle (tivo provides hash marks every 30 mins so you press the -> key and it'll jump to the next hash mark). My comcast box does not have that, I have to sit through fast forwarding.

Many actions require many more button presses on the comcast, for example deleting shows on a TiVo is a 1 button affair from the list (clear).

The show Guide won't let you view prior to the current time. Useful say when it's wednesday and I want to start a series recording off a show that aired tuesday. Comcast I'd have to go to the next week.

Not to mention TiVo starts recording different shows on it's own depending on the shows you record or rate.

All of this is based off my experience with the series 1 box. I'm sure they've improved the interface on the latter boxes.

If you have TiVo stock, I feel sorry for you.

Wow that a huge jump.

Be interesting to see what they have to say for themselves to the stockholders about the massive loss of customers.
