Goodbye AC97

Well, this has completely put me off buying an Audigy2 now.

I'll keep my Digital SoundStorm going for a while yet then. Hopefully I'll get some top quality Sound on my next motherboard.... I have nothing against soundcards or buying one but Im usually happy with what comes onboard as its better than what I had.

So basically AIWGuru is saying that the sound quality of my Abit NF7 is the exact same as my Audigy 2 which is the exact same as an M-Audio Revolution which is the exact same and a Soundblaster Live! because they're all AC97.

Unless he's saying that AC97 is some kind of minimum standard to ensure compliance across brands?

AC'97 is a standard...like directx. It doesn't mean that all cards which conform to it use the same converters, dsps...

I think you missed the last line in my last post, which hinted that I do indeed know what AC97 is.

But just to run through it one more time, the Audigy 2 and Turtle Beach Santa Cruz are pretty much the exact same card, right?

The Audigy 2 and pretty much all the other "premium" sound cards are far beyond the basic requirements of this standard. Unfortunately they're held back by some requirements of it...

I really don't care about SACD, because it's a Sony only format, and is converted(pcm) before processing.

I'm wondering if MS cares about low-latency? Creative doesn't... as much as they like to say they have ASIO drivers, they don't work. Plain and simple.

And not every card conforms to AC97. Hence, ASIO.

But then not everyone cares about high-end, low-latency audio for recording and music composition...

I care about as much for low latency audio as I do for colour accurate CRTs. Some people need it, I don't. Give me an LCD and an Audigy 2 ZS any day.

And there are ASIO hacks that do work with the Audigy 2. It's supposed to be quite a bit of trouble getting them to work though.

I don't think that everyone who uses onboard sound dosnt care about audio...I have liked some onboard solutions as much as many stand alone cards, while other onboard sound has been less than stellar. I know that when I use one of my computers that dosnt have a lot of room for a big speaker set, I really dont mind if I use onboard, because I dont need really exceptional sound quality...

I'd say that using headphones requires a higher quality sound source than "big speakers"...
