I have an older G5, yeah the one with all the problems. One thumb button, wonky scroll wheel, everything. Well I think I've finally had it and am looking at a wireless mouse to take its place. I don't really have a brand preference, and am right handed so formed mice aren't a problem. I've looked at the G700 and it looks pretty solid. I suppose I'm more of a "claw" type gamer, but really I've had a number of mice over the years and just adapt to each one. The G700 appeals to me because it just charges via a cable, no removeable battery + dock system. So I can still use it like it's a wired mouse while it's charging. The only thing I may have a problem with is the cluttered thumb buttons. I don't need 4 there... in fact I probably don't even need 2 since I'm so used to gaming with 1. Is there something similar with only 2 thumb buttons? If not I'll probably just go with this anyway unless there's any glaring issues with it.

Razer Mamba is really the only one that compares to the G700. Very pricey though. MS X8 gets decent reviews but I hate the way it feels in my hand (claw also).

Honestly, I've tried 3 or 4 different gaming mice over the last year and I keep coming back to the G5 (2nd version, alien blue). I've been wanting to try out the Cyborg RAT 7, but there are too many negative comments on build quality. Guess if you're stuck on wireless it doesn't really matter.

edit: there's the RAT 9 also, wireless. Haven't read any reviews on it though.

I've been using a Razer Mamba for a bit over a year now, I love it. It honestly is the best wireless gaming mouse out right now. Keep an eye on woot.com, they usually have refurb ones every now an then.

I've got the Logitech G700 and the Microsoft Sidewinder X8. I prefer the X8. Want to buy a lightly used G700? :)

I have semi-large hands and the G700 forces me into a claw grip. The G700 also has a very lame thumb button setup - they are so close that I have to map them all to the same thing otherwise I constantly push the wrong button. The G700 also comes with a charging USB cable that is way too thick (easily replaced with something thinner), making it clunky to use with the cable attached.

I've used the following, all to good effect :

MX Revolution
MX1100
Performance MX
G700 (current)
Razr Mamba (current)

Swtich between the G700 and Mamba depending on my mood :)

@OP : Actually, the G700 uses a single AA battery. You can charge via cable but I greatly prefer just having a stash of charged NiMHs around. Plus it comes with an eneloop batt, great stuff!

I would say G700 is a very good choice more buttons overall than MX revolution with better overall performance, ability for macro functions right in the setpoint software, dont know if other non gaming mice can through setpoint as i only ever used them in version 4.8 and lastly the charging convenience. I only ever considered razor's naga because i prefer more buttons on the mouse, but dont really look into their mice because they dont have the scrolling technology like logitech does. An all in one solution mouse is much better on logitechs end and G700 is great at this.

To be fair, the MX Revo wasn't marketed as a gaming mouse and is quite heavy for one (along with the Performance MX). The MX1100 is the worst though - I can't use NiMHs in it and can only use lightweight Rayovac alkys because the weight is just too much for fast flicks (rocket / sticky jumping, etc.)

well weight is per user thing. i keep my mouse on the heavy side for low sens railing.

one thing that irks me about the advanced scroll wheels these days is that now i can't use the scroll wheel press down click as anything because the dang wheel is so sensitive it messes up the click and the software doesnt interpret it correctly.

really? i have no problem using the press on the scroll wheel whether it is free spin or ratchet. The only inconvenience is that your scrolling will come to a stop when you have to press down for it. I just assign that button for closing windows, it has been great for that.

I recently fell in love with my Steelseries mouse and keyboard. Though, for gaming, I've learned that wireless is not so much great. Is there a reason you want it wireless?

The cable is quite the annoyance with my current setup. It can get caught on stuff and generally limits my movements because of how small my current desk is. I'm not competitive enough to care about lag or any other wireless issues, so it's only a convenience thing.
