Good used car website

I believe the timing belt and exhaust just got killed due to an intermittent ignition problem that my mechanic and I have been chasing for a while. I've been replacing things pretty frequently this last year, and I just don't feel like putting any more money into this old of a car (96 Grand Am).

Can anyone here recommend a site like autotrader.com, automart.com, or somebody else to buy a used car? Or should I just shop at the local dealers?

Thanks!

autotrader.com is what I use to find some cars, although my last car I bought off the "lemon lot" here in post. GL on your search for a better car!

If you're looking at dealers, carsdirect.com has used listings, and I've found them to be lower than what the dealers have on the sticker when you go to the lot.

If you're looking for private party, try craigslist.

Thanks guys, keep the sites coming!

As a side note, I've found quite a few Maximas in my year/price range, and I've always like those. I have a feeling I'll be posting a "YACT" thread in a month or so.

Start here, and work your way out.

When I needed a car, I first decided which one I wanted, then started shopping. Checked all the private owners in the classifieds, then Auto Trader and finally called dealers. My wife was pretty specific in what she wanted, so we ended up buying one from a dealer 40 miles from here. I found the dealer's prices weren't much worse than private owners, and I was armed with my CarFAX reports before I even went to look at the prospects. Sample of the research...

Use auto trader. They link to most of the dealers local to you. Then you can also brows though what your local dealer has on thier lots as well.

Meaning go to auto trader and stick in how far you want to travel.
Select any dealer listing and in that listing should have a direct link to that dealerships own website.
Click that and you can look at thier inventory as well now and call them if one catches your eye.

You be the winner then and can do that for pretty much all the dealer listings on auto trader.

Sweet. Thanks for all the help and suggestions guys. I haven't had to buy a car in roughly 10 years, so I'm a little rusty. I've already found a couple sweet deals on AutoTrader, so more than likely I will be in a new(to me) car in a short time.
