also i'd probably try to fork out some more money and get a scion xA/xB

impala is an excellent, even tho personally i think it's a bit large.

the second part of the comment i have nothing to say about...

but i suggest a slightly used altima... $10k cannot get you a decent deal on maxima/accord/camry.

or how about a shiny new cavalier... MSRP $10995

Civics get great gas mileage, no need for a hybrid if you can get 40mpg out of a normal car. A camry isn't a bad choice either, it will probably have a better ride too. Test drive one of each and then pick.
 
You can easily get a (near)loaded slightly used Ford Taurus for $10K... their resale value is terrible, but you can get an outstanding value if you buy used.
