OK, I'm looking for a UPS for my new system, I just want enought backup time to save everything and shutdown my computer if the power went out. And also for it to supply good clean electrical current to my PC. Any suggestions are welcome!

New system specs:
Antec 430 watt True power supply
Epox 8K5A2+
AMD athlon XP 1600 OC'd to 1.7 ghz
Geforce4 4200 Ti
Seagate 40gb 7200 rpm HDD

Do you need to know more?

I bought a APC 350VA from an OD deal a while back. I have a 400W system and I pulled the plug on the power. The system stayed up but I didn't keep track of how long it stayed up. There was a power outage in my building and the computer saved all the work and hibernated. The 350VA comes with software also, but if you plug the UPS into your USB port in XP, it'll recognize it and configure all the power settings for you. I did a search on the Hot Deals forums but it looks like there haven't been that many deals on UPSs. The 350VA retails for under $100 and the price can be brought down significantly after manufacturer rebates combined with store rebates and/or coupons. Just keep an eye out at the Hot Deals forum. Hope this helps.

UPSs don't have a lifespan based on number of outages do they? I assume they can recharge pretty efficiently, but I really don't know much about them.

UPS's have two life spans, the batteries and the power components.

The batteries can last 1 to 5 years usually.

The power components last until surges and other power problems fry them.

My Opti 650E just died after 7 years of service. Pretty good mileage.

I am looking for 1400VA now as the longest outage was about 45 minutes and this should allow me to work straight through if needed, or have a short backup and have 100% of my machine running.

🙂

My APC BP1000 is still going strong after 5 years. It gets tested during the summer with the occasional outages due to line work. I have everything on it: system, cable modem, monitor and 5.1 speaker system. This consistantly last for 42 mins before Win2000 shuts it down automatically. My advice is to monitor the Hot Deal forums. I've seen some great UPS deals in there quite often.
