I had one of those consumer reports best buy direct drive vauums from sears once, and it was terrible.

Vacuum wife and I are using is a Eureka that advertises itself as being as good as a Dyson.

Having not used a Dyson, but deciding to read up on some reviews, it comes really close to the Dyson, at a quarter the price, so it is what we have used for the past year, and are satisfied.

Eureka Airspeed Gold. What makes this one different from a lot of vacuums on the market is that, most vacuums send the dirt through the hose attachment even when using it on a floor. So dirt goes from floor sucker through attachment hose to dirt cup/bag.

The airspeed has a dial on the side, so you either go from floor direct to cup, or from attachment hose to cup. It seems to work a lot better than any vacuum I ever used. My only complaint is the hose a bit small.

The filters I just wash in the sink when needed.

Anyways, here is a link on Amazon, though I found my on at the local Walmart.

It's worth checking out craigslist for used Dyson or Fantom vacuums. If they aren't totally abused or burned up, they can be cleaned up and refurbished. The Fantoms were Canadian made and had the Dyson technology years before, but for some reason they went out of business.

Personally, I use a thirty year old Hoover Concept 1 that uses bags but cleans better than anything else I have in the house. Why?... simply because it is straight suction into the bag, no hoses, worthless filters or cleaning tool attachments.

I got a pair of Dyson DC33 for my business. The ease of emptying out dirt and eliminating changing bags were a god sent for us. The sucking is really good. Got it for $339/each out the door at Costco.
