I want to build a computer this summer. Is that a good or bad time to upgrade? Anything new i should be looking at?

I think it is a good time, there might be something new coming out, but all in all you will see intels core 2 duo price cuts and more mother boards for it (and it looks like ram might get a little cheaper with the 70nm mass production starting.)

Quad cores are ETA for January right? So around June quad cores would be reasonably priced as well as the bugs would be ironed out?

Hard to say...currently, the reasoning goes that if you have a choice between dual-EE and quad, go quad: similar price, twice the number of processors, thus more future-proof.

It's all a guess about near-future quad prices right now. They might not be reduced in price nearly as much as the current EE procs by June, especially since AMD won't release their quads for at least a few more months (and they might be late, too). But regardless of AMD's dates, June should be a good time for both basic and EE C2D proc prices.

Let's clear some things up first of all...
* What hardware are you running now?
* What type of usage does your current rig perform (what are the main programs you use)?
* What's your upgrade budget?
* Have you built a PC in the past or done a major hardware upgrade?

Well, most realistically i would build around September-Mid August.

I have built my computer and dont major upgrades to others. My rig:

A64 3400+ (NC) | BFG 6800GT OC | Fortron 530w PSU |
DFI Lanparty UT | 1.5GB Kingston Value RAM | Audigy 2 ZS Gamer |
Diamondmax10 w/ 16mb cache| Antec P160| Logitech Z2200 2.1 | NEC 3500A | 7700 Zalman HSF

Budget is from 1500-200 bucks (including cheap (~200) LCD monitor).

I just did a CPU/mobo/RAM upgrade. I went back and forth and then just did it. I'm sure in a few weeks the prices will go down but oh well. In my expirence its never a good time to upgrade because prices will always go down on what you buy and there is always something new around the conner. You just have to bite the bullet and do it and then live with it. For example, I upgraded to an AMD64/PCI-E setup in Sept 05. In 4 months the price of A64 chips were down almost $100. The only thing that didn't droped drastically in price was the RAM I got. Now I just upgraded to a C2D setup.
