I'm running a 1ghz Tbird with Axia stepping. I have an Alpha Pal 6035 with a 6800rpm Delta. My proccesor's idle temp is 34C. I ran 3dMark2001 with T&L Software mode at 1025x768x32 4xAA Triple buffer 24bit-Z while playing MP3s and the CPU temp shot up to 48C. It took about 8 mins to come back down to 34C. Should I have the fan blowing air on the heatsink or have it sucking air through and off the heatsink? Right now its blowing.

I have no idea what my room temperature is.

*Edit: My case temp is 29C, not 21C like I thought.*

You oc'ing at all?

Alphas are designed for the fan to suck air off the heatsink. Try switching the fan around. A lot just depends on your case, components etc... you were stressing the CPU pretty hard, IMO temps aren't too bad.

Your case temps are fine... so you either just have a hot processor or maybe it's time for a new heatsink and fan. However, the temps you are experiencing aren't outside the normal operating temps for a Tbird.

Nope not OC'ing yet. I'll switch the fan around. Do I need to remove the heatsink or can I flip the fan while its in the case?

OMG! I cleaned out the front intakes(first time since I built it last June) and there was friggen ton-o-dust bunnies. Anyway, my mproccesor's idle temp is 30C and my case temp dropped to 26C. Also I still need to know if I need to remove the heatsink or if I can flip the fan without removing the heatsink from the proccesor? (Of course the system with be off and disconnected either way)

You should be able to flip the fan with the heatsink on assuming it does not take too much force to get the fan off. If you are finding it hard to get the fan off, then go ahead and remove the heatsink.

Yep, a good cleaning once in awhile really will help airflow. ;) I have an acrylic case that has 4 92mm fans. I just gutted everything out for a good cleaning, and let me tell you, the dust bunnies really multiplied. :)

filters are a man's best friend...you all should make use of them for all your intake fans it will make your cpu life that much better:)

I still need to get some compressed air for the heatsink, once I get that I'll blast the dust out and flip the fan.

Ah yes, a good compressor is your friend. (Or failing that, buy a can of "air")
One caveat though, do not spin the fans too fast with the compressed air. I cleaned out my 2 year old computer the other week with compressed air, and I hit one of the fans with it at such an angle that it spun REALLY fast (I am gussing at least 10k PRM by ear, way louder than a delta :)) and now the fan is noisier than it used to be, I am pretty sure I damaged the bearings. It's no big deal, just a $4 fan I will replace it, buy it is something to watch out for. I would recomend you avoid doing this by angling the air in close to parallel to the blades of the fan so it only spins slowly. Or hold the fan still with a finger while blasting it.

Ok, I got the compressed air and cleaned out the case(lots-o-dust) and heatsink(MEGA lots-o-dust). While I was at it I flipped my heatsink fan over so its sucking out. Anyway, turned the the computer on and let it sit for 10mins. No major change in temps, in fact they went up slightly: case 27C, proc 31C(I am in a hotter room now though). Then I decided to put my cleaning to the text. Loaded up mp3s in RealPlayer1, loaded up videos w/ sound in Media player, and loaded up 3DMark2001 with T&L Software mode at 1025x768x32, Triple buffer, and 24bit-Z(Couldn't get AA to work, dunno why). Started playing the mp3s and videos. Started the benchmark. Everything ran well, cept mp3s skipped sometimes. So 3dmark finishes and I look at the temps(mp3s and vids are still playing). Proc was only 42C and the case temp even dropped to 26C! Also it only took 3mins to return to idle temp of 31C instead of 8mis b4 cleaning. I also have onboard sound ta boot. If this isn't proof everyone should clean their case every once in a while, I don't know what is. :D

Last post I promise. Unlees someone needs a response from me.

I spoke too soon. After about an hour of surfing the web my proc is 28C and my cas is 23C. I just gets better and better.
