I'm a big fan of Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth saga, almost all of RA Salvatore's books, and I just started reading George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones, which is most excellent so far. Lot of shadow political games between nobles in a medieval setting.
Yeah LOTR is kinda boring to read, too much poems and singing.
No kidding. I'd be reading along, then there'd be several pages of Legolas or Aragorn singing.

for a long time, I felt the same way, but after reading LotR after maturing and spending four years studying literature in college, I can really appreciate the fact that it's increadibly well-written.

Salvatore can describe an action sequence better than any other author around. Period. Dot. Tokien could describe any sort of action at all. The scene in Fellowship where they are running through Moria and get jumped by the orcs and the cave troll is literally 3 short sentences in the book, then they are running again. Then they break into song . . . again.
Why should someone have to take 4 years of college literature to enjoy a book? The attention spans of people these days are short enough.
No doubt LOTR was great for its time, and I will give Tokien props for bringing the fantasy genre into the limelight, and I will give him props for starting what eventually become D&D, but he has been eclipsed by better authors.
Terry Goodkind and George RR Martin have a much more mature writing style than Salvatore, with better developed plots and characters, but they cannot describe action as well as Salvatore.
Our Town, to this day, I cannot think of any plot, purpose, or point to the play. It was simply existed. A Seperate Peace was just boring, very boring. Keep in mind, I was reading Robert Jordan books at the time, so don't even think about saying I had a short attention span.

But it's a REALLY good book!!!
Maybe I'm being prejudice but it's still girly to me. What I'm looking for is a good drama, thriller, horror, fantasy, science fiction, or classic novel. I want a nice long series, so far I like Left Behind series, Sword of Truth, and maybe Exodus. BTW I also like Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman.
It has a nice cover. I don't really know what it's about. No user reviews, or image of the back cover for me to consider. I might drop by Barnes and Nobles to check it out.
Ok must sleep for 9am class tomorrow, I've spent too much time thinking about books. Thanks for the input everyone.
