Good substitution for Quicktime?

Is it possible to get Quicktime Alternative to work in Firefox? I tried, but wasn't able to figure it out. I kept getting the message to install QT even though I had the codecs and pointed to vlc.exe to open QT file types. So I installed Quicktime 🙁
