Good starter telescope?

For that price, I would go with an Orion or Celestron Short Tube instead of that one. For a little more, the ETX line is quite good and very portable.

Do a search in the archives using 'telescope' and 'astronomy' and you'll find threads where this is discussed at length.

You might also consider a good quality pair of 7x50 or 10x50 binoculars. You'd be surprised at what you can see. Using both eyes will heighten your visual acuity plus you'll have the benefit of daytime use of the binocs.

Sam's Club has a great price on the manual ETX-90; roughly $389, I think.

If I were starting at it agin, I would probably get that, and then put more money towards nice oculars.

[edit]$349, confirmed this morning
