The SB Live Platinum sounds neat to me because of the way you can plug instruments, mikes, etc. into a front panel board. But, I've heard a lot of bad things about the sound card itself. Is there some other way to get this functionality, e.g. could you buy a Santa Cruz and then buy some separate device that made it easy to plug in instruments, etc.?

How good are these cards (which support multiple speakers) when reproducing Dolby 5.1 from DVDs? With good speakers/amplifiers, can Acoustic Edge generate home theater quality (and spatial) sound - without using S/PDIF and a conventional decoder?

hey yall i using a yamaha 744 based sound card coupled with a CMOY headphone amp/senn HD580. would CS4630 based card offer a significant boost in sound quality for music? i could really care less about 5.1 or 3d possitioning sound gimmick.

that's funny that technogeeky has had trouble with his Herc. XP with w2k and smp. I've been stuggling with the same situation for weeks and it would seem that only my Herc. XP will run effectively in my smp w2k system...It also has the best sound of the few different cards i've tried recently.

Notice the people that have an alternative to the SB family compare how much better it is. Notice the people that support the SB family, they don't mention any comparison. They seem to have nothing to compare it to, and when you don't know any better.......

SoundBlaster 128 PCI. Costs about $27 or less. It's one of the best supported cards with very good drivers.

I even have one in my main rig :)

rw120555: If you like the features of the SBLive, check out the Hercules Game Theater XP. I believe it has the same features (even the "live drive" type of piece of equipment) will sound better, work better, and even is 50 bucks cheaper retail.

My AE cost less than $70 before the $20 rebate. Check the Hot Deals forum for much better prices.
