I've tried almost every socket organizer known to man (I think anyway...).. from magnets to clips to trays etc etc..

Everyone single one seems to have a major flaw - trays are nice except not portable. Magnet type are portable but IME too heavy/ackward. The cliprails ( http://www.amazon.com/3-pc-Pro...&qid=1216069914&sr=1-3 ) are ok but can be slippery.

I bought this http://www.amazon.com/Hansen-G...qid=1216069698&sr=1-12 at sears for about $15. So far it's the best... only a few flaws - it's a bit awkward since it has to be flat, but it holds a fair amount of sockets (in 1/4" anyway) if it tips over then sockets probably go everywhere. Also, it doesn't account for 6 or 12 point sockets (although I pretty much only use 6 point anyway) and since it holds deep sockets upright you have to have a deep drawer in your tool box.

Ok... your turn.. Post up what you use to hold sockets..

i have about 8 of the metal clip rails. seems to be working great for me.

i watned to go the red magentic ones you see or the tray you got but the metal clip holds everything securely for the most part where as all the other JUST DONT. but the plastic tray makes things easier. a lot of times with grease all over your hands its hard to get a socket off the clip.

It's also sometimes difficult to always have the sockets oriented where you know for sure what size you're pulling off..

..and they don't work well with large/heavy sockets either. IME 1/2" sockets are better with the red magnetic type since they're already so heavy

they suck for a roller toolbox and constat use, at least for me. I want to walk over grab a socket and move one, not have to hold the rail down and pry the socket off, (my snap ons are horrible). I made a peg board out of wood for home and steel at work. I didn't make them as tall though, only a little over 1/4". Works great for the hundereds of sockets.

I do use the spring rails for in my truck though since it sees repairs on the trail mainly.

My pops has one of those little plastic hardcases with a tray in it with all his sockets. It's like a little tacklebox but a bit stronger. Put the smaller ones in the tray and the deep ones with the ratchets underneath. Works pretty good. I've been looking for something similar because like moose I don't like having to pry the bastards off and I want them all in one box so that I'm not hunting around.

I've never found a good socket storage solution. Back when I worked at a shop we had the foam inserts in the toolbox drawers and they were really nice, but they sure wasted a lot of space. Right now I use the metal rails with the clips because my toolbox is actually a toolbag with about 30 lbs worth of tools in it.

When it comes time to work on my car I usually just pull off the few sockets that are regularly used 10mm - 14mm and have them spread all over the ground (both 6 and 12 points) :( It is just too much of a hastle to constantly replace those sockets onto the rail.

I did have an idea to make a "bandolier" for sockets where you'd just slip them into snug pouches. Would probably work better for 3/8+ deep well sockets.

I've seen some that are like little metal boxes. But they came as part of a Mac wobble set. So not exactly cheap nor available for general use.
