Good/Simple Video Compression software?

I need to compress a 9 minutes video into an e-mail friendly size, like 100mb. current software gives a horrible result, loosing all quality even at 600 MB.

There must be some good / simple video editing software out there today? (unlike 6 years ago when I had to mess around for days and many different codecs etc.. just to get something half decent, took all the fun out of it).

Recommendations? (free is possible) Thanks?
 
handbrake to h264 mkv it..high profile..high settings.
chop it with mkvmerge gui
your post lacks relevant info anyways, even h264 isn't going to do magic
 
i'd use handbrake. for simplicity just start out with a 2 pass encode with a target filesize of 100mb, and see how that goes. what software are you using now?
