What good books gave you the creeps or a real scare? You know, the kind that make you hesitant to turn off the lights when you're done reading and want to go to sleep.

Robert McCammon stuff is pretty good
Koontz has some good ones although his is more suspense. Watchers is great.
Brian Lumley's Necroscope series is really good if you like Vampires

All the authors I would have mentioned are already here, also consider Robin Cook - some good medical stuff. Its not horror horror, but its mostly medical horror/mystery-horror stuff. Just to reitterate:

Clive Barker - weird, strange, mystifying and sometimes scary? yea I guess
Anne Rice - not scary and probably not considered horror, just good reading (the original 5 vampire chronicles any way)
John Saul - cool, interesting, but again - not really scary

But then again I don't get scarred by anything anymore, this is a result of reading Stephen King at the age of 9-10.

Dude, the one where Joe gets kidnapped is much more intense. I think it was What Happened at Midnight. The one with Anchor Joe. I read that book probably twenty times about ten years ago.

Dan Simmons - Summer of Night and its sequel, A Winter Haunting. They were somewhat scary but were great books, but you gotta watch out for Dan Simmons' other books he's got some issues.

I've read like 3 or 4 of Koontz's books and they aren't really scary. More suspense and action.

I've always wanted to give Clive Barker a try, his Spawn action figures crap was pretty sweet.

"Zodiac" and "Zodiac Unmasked" (both non-fiction)

David Fincher is directing the movie version of this story.

It is older, but still good.

Yes very good stuff. Look for a compilation of short stories. See if you can find one with "The Moth" in it.

Edit: There's another good one called "The Land Ironclads" though it's not exactly horror.

koontz- watchers and phantoms
read them when i was much younger, and they were pretty good for entertainment, suspense, scare.

when i got older, clive barker.

now i hardly ever read fiction unless it's a classic.
