Good scanner for around $150?

I am building a pc for somebody and they want a scanner. Unfortunatly I really don't know a heck of a lot about scanners. I am thinking of maybe this but some help would be greatly apreciated. I can also get that same scanner for less without the camera but I think it would be a nice addition. I want to keep it around $150 and preferably something that buy.com has so I can use a nice $30 off rebate. Thank you.
 
I'd recommend these brands in the following order:

Epson
Umax
HP

Epson's are typically expensive, but I was able to grab a demo floor model at CompUSA during a big sale for $35... not sure if they still have the sale going on, check the Hot Deals forum.
 
Hmmm, not sure about Microtek, I've had experiences with the three brands that I mentioned and Canon. Don't ever buy a Canon! They are horrid. Epson's are the most used scanners in the professional business. My school here is loaded with Epson scanners, and so was my high school HP's weren't that bad. And the first scanner I ever got was a Umax Astra USB scanner. It was one of the first scanners with USB capability, that's why I bought it.

I'll do a little digging for you, but I doubt the Microtek will get many good scores... gotta go to work now...
 
Canon N1220U

This scanner is awesome.. 1200X2400dpi 42bit... USB (only 1 cable, no power cord) Also, its small (like the old computer shopper magazines). $164 - $30... $134.
 
I'm very happy with the award winning Plustek Optic Pro UT12. I saw it demo'd at a computer fair, and was sold. It's a bit older, but it's also very well priced for the features and quality.
 
Another vote for the Cannon here, saw that baby in action and loved it. Next chance I get it will be coming home with me. Anyone who has a negative opinion of it I would love to know some specifics. Seriously, it's on my shopping list as something to pick up in the next month or so.
 
N1220U has a resolution of 1200x2400....less than 2KG in weight....very thin, very light, looks awesome.

Does not need an external power supply....all comes straight through the USB port. Scanning speed is average, not too bad. Because the scanner is based on a contact LIDE, it has a little bit of trouble scanning stuff that is a long distance from the platen....ie towards the spine of very thick books. I don't have trouble with this as I use the scanner for photos.

I have used the Epson Perfection 1240u for about two months and really like it. Fantastic scan quality. It is much bigger than the Canon though.
 
I think I'll get them an epson perfection 1240u for $146 after the -$30 coupon from buy.com. Thanks for all your help.
 
I have to second the Canon. I have the older, FB620p. Yes, it's on the slow side, and the quality isn't as nice as on the newer ones. Mine is like 600x600dpi / 30-bit. I got it because it only cost $99, and it was the smallest scanner around, and small is good for college living. I'd buy one again, though.
