Good router with programmable QoS

I have been through the range of WD routers; up to the 900N, and they don't do what they're supposed to (which may be why they're no longer making them).

I can't find a good recommendation anywhere that allows me to set a single PC to HIGH priority for all traffic and another computer to LOW priority. The other devices (wireless, 2 other PCs) can be neutral.

What are you guys using?

I have 25mbps down, 3mbps up.

The reason for this is my daughter will open up 3-5 tabs full of images/videos, etc and I am unable to play Battlefield. My pings jump to 300-500ms.

I have a cisco small business switch that cost around 100 dollars or so, probably cheaper in the US, which supports port QoS through GUI. Haven't tried playing around with it, but given its Cisco, you should be able to get something out of it.

Unfortunately I'd like to hear from someone that has confirmed this can be done.

Western Digital worked with me for about 10 hours, upgraded my router 3 times and even custom configured it before sending it to me. No dice.

I don't mind spending the money on something that WILL do it - but I want to know what product will do it.

Because most people have very little knowledge about Networking QOS became sort of "Kitchen sink" term.

It really depends on what exactly the user want to Control.

Some traffic can not be controlled unless you use a professional manged switch, some end user Wireless Router has decent QOS but you have to find the One that does exactly what you want and accept the Wireless or what ever else the Router can do.

Example:

Asus ac66 page - http://support.asus.com/FAQ/Detail....D-98C9-9D26-129A-3D5E596D3073&p=11&m=RT-AC66U

TP-Link page - http://www.tp-link.us/article/?faqid=194

The important thing is to pay attention to the ports.

Question on the ASUS N66U...
As it only has 4 ports (my WD has 6)... will the Traffic Management work with a dumb switch? From the video, I don't see why not since we can manage by IP or MAC and those would always come through to the router regardless of an additional switch in front of the router.

Jack.. yeah, I should have used Traffic Shaping instead of QoS. QoS usually refers to packets flagged for priority such as voice or video that requires it to be synchronous.

As long as there is enough menu entries it should work on traffic that comes from the Internet to the Network.

So I picked up this router - and unfortunately the default rules do not work.

Computer A, playing Battlefield 4
Computer B, updating Sims 3 (big patch apparently).

I ended up with 300ms pings (normally 40ms).

The default rules are: if the packet size is over 512kb (on port 80 or 443), then it's assumed to be a larger file transfer operation and will relegated to low priority). I suppose they could be using 21 for FTP... but I doubt it.

Not seeing a way to specify all ports from that Computer B as low priority (as I don't think I can see what ports are being used by the Sims updater without installing Wireshark, which I'm not a fan of using - it's like eating crawfish, lot of work for little reward).

I personally just ordered a Ubiquiti EdgeMax Lite router. It's $99 bucks and has enterprise features (based on vyatta). I got sick of dealing with home gear that flakes out constantly. I'm hoping going with a more 'enterprise' product will finally solve a lot of my complaints.

*update: I've had the router in place for 2 days now and it was a breeze to setup (after I updated the firmware) and I've been really impressed.
