Jaguar XK also seems like a good option for this usage. Never been in one, but it seems to be in the same general class.

Challenger is good for a road trip. Plenty of interior space, and a 4 hooker trunk. When I got mine I went 1600 miles in less than 2 days and it was very comfortable.

IMO, a VW TDI - any of the Golf, Jetta, Passat, or Audi A3.
Reasons: Great efficiency, comfortable seats, and nice to drive.

I drove an older VW Jetta TDI on a pretty long day's drive. NEVER AGAIN....it was the most pathetically slow car I have ever driven. Ever.

I went and flew out to philly to pick my 135i up and drive it home (1600miles) with sport seats ... buddy said it was the most comfortable seats he has ever been in and he cannot sleep on car rides (we drove 2600 miles RT to/from Canada before and didn't sleep), I too knocked out!

The trunk space is decent, back seat can hold a few things, but at most, it's a 2 people road trip car.

Got 29 MPG on the way home too!

135i is on my short list. I think its the perfect blend of everything I want minus the LSD. If the 370z would be more of a grand tourer I would consider this the car for me. Sadly its out of the price range.

All of you have mentioned great cars, I just wanted to say again that I want the car that can handle it all and still give a sporty feel/ride when it comes to say Mt. Carving and twisty roads. It would suck to drive 10 hours in a boat only to come across a nice scenic road going less than the speed limit up it :(

CTS-V Wagon or E63 AMG Wagon would be ideal

Looking for a C32 AMG :)

horrible ride for long trips. unless you are just running on autobhan. I was being jarred to pieces in my buddy's C55 AMG riding around town.

the CTS-V Wagon has the magnetically enhanced shocks.

The GTO I had was awesome for road trips. It is a great touring car and the seats are top notch.

Mopar or no car:thumbsup:

Friend of mine test drove one with with the 392 hemi, said it felt like a cockpit cause the hemi pulled so hard.

Only beast i came close to a hemi was my 65 newport with a 383 with a edelbrock 600cfm carb but it would chew drum brakes for breakfast,i do regret selling it.:(

Have you looked at pontiac G8 GXP's ? If thats too much to spend the 05-06 GTO is a nice driving car as well. Gobs of torque and nice ride. Plus the most comfortable seats I have ever been in.

I haven't been able to find GXP's that don't carry a price premium. I'd be happy with a G8 GT btw

Worst road trip car I've owned: 70 GTO with leaking rear main seal. Closely followed by 1987 Mustang 5.0 with no A/C, shot fifth gear synchros, broken gas gauge AND broken speedometer, with honorable mention given to: 1984 Jeep CJ-7 with broken A/C.

Best,
If you care about comfort and gas mileage: 2007 Camry.
If you care about fun: 2012 GT500.

If I could pick anything for a road trip I'd probably go Bentley SS Vert.
Anything under 100k, I'd probably go with getting a decent deal on a 2012 SL550 vert.
Under 50k I'd go with my GT500, even though it's not that comfortable suspension wise, it makes up for it with good seats and a lot of fun.
Under 30k maybe find a used 06 or so 6 series, or M3, vert.

I'm gonna go a little outside of everyone else's suggestions. '13 Taurus, Flex or MKX w/ MyFord Touch.

My cousin has an Edge with it. It's by far the best set of in-car electronics available. On a long trip, you're going to want easy access to your music, nav, the ability to grab some quick info off of the internet, etc. I chose the 3 cars that I did because they're large and comfortable. If going cross-country, that's a factor that outweighs the car riding on rails. The Taurus will still be fun to drive, not as much as an M5 or something, but a good blend of comfort, technology and fun.

If I had to drive from Maine to San Diego today, I'd just take my Outback. It's not the most spirited car, but it's really roomy, comfortable, and I know that I can take it off the paved roads for some fun.

No wonder I see different cars all along the highway, everybody has a different opinion :)

Nobody has mentioned high strung noise boxes at least :)

E46 M3 went to Barcelona via Mialau from Surrey fine. Not sure what you guys are about with a hard ride...I guess I'm use to that because I had an S2000 so the hard ride has neer bothered me.

I think the M5/M6 would be beastily on road trips. My mate recently bought an M6 and it just felt so fast. Huge boot and 2 rear seats as well.

I test drove a 370z for half an hour back when it first came out. One with sport pack. It Actually feels like driving any new Infiniti its a lot quieter and smoother than a 350z and I'd imagine the touring model without sport would be pretty decent.

Reason I didnt get one was it was just too impractical and I couldn't drive stick at the time. Really cool car tho .

How well do these challengers and chargers handle up in the mountains?

Terrific. The new generation of mopars handle very nice. Google for the vid where car and driver or motorweek, I forget, are banging the SRT8 through the course and remarking that it feels like a German sports car.

I had no problems. I went through Yosemite, and it wasnt rolling all over the place. I'm not one to go too fast around turns in the mountains, when a mistake means you die. Down in the flats when I could see past turns I'd take 35-45 mph turns at 80ish, and it would slide for a fraction of a sec before traction control kicks in, and then its like you are on rails. At least thats what I think was happening.

You can feel the cars inertia in turns, but it doesnt slide around.
