I'm not sure I've ever knowingly come across this term. Apparently it was wide spread in geographic naming, but don't think I've ever ran across it at least that I remember.Of course you didn't.
That said, good on her for correcting it. I know people get bent out of shape over changing names of geographic features, but if you look at the history of the names most had very little thought or meaning put into them. A huge amount of things were named after people on the USGS survey team or their families.
