So, I've been at a wall for quite some time with my exercise and eating habits, and have decided to do the 12-week Body For Life routine, as I think the structure will help. Bill Phillips obviously recommends Myoplex as often as 3 times a day, which makes sense since he was co-owner of EAS at the time. I like protein shakes and think this method would be convenient to assist with the 6 meals a day philosophy, but after looking at all the artificial ingredients in Myoplex, I'd like to form an alternative.

Currently, I use either Optimum Nutrition (yes, I know it has artificial sweeteners) or True Protein Hemp or Pea Protein, both with only Stevia added. Can anyone recommend a good addition to this protein, or another meal replacement similar to Myoplex that is at least more natural?

Eat some lean chicken breast with some brown rice... or some turkey with beans... Honestly, unless you're really lifting heavy or putting out a lot of volume, protein shakes are a waste of money. It would behoove you much more to just make it part of your lifestyle and maintain it. Therefore, instead of using whey, put together a bunch of little meals. It doesn't take long and most of the work can be done in an hour or two on the weekends for the entire week.

What makes you think you need a meal replacement shake? While I have nothing against them, do use them and think it's an easy (and convenient) way to to get protein, it's not required. In fact, most of your diet should be whole foods anyway. Digestion will generally be slower, keep you fuller, full of nutrients, etc.

Also, what makes you think you need 6 meals a day?

I wouldn't go as far as saying a waste of money. Well... I guess it depends what you're buying. If you're buying the typical overpriced junk from GNC, then yes. However, the price per gram of protein on competitively priced protein powder is very low compared to most whole food sources.

I'm aware I don't NEED one, it would just be extremely convenient as I work 8-5 Mon-Fri and would like to not have to be going to the break room and microwaving 2-3 meals for myself every day.

As for the 6 meals a day, that's part of the Body For Life routine.

I agree, but for the normal individual, satiety and regularity of life is essential. A chicken breast may be more expensive, but fills you up more and provides the sensation of a meal. Psychologically and physiologically, it's better to eat the protein than drink it for most individuals (other than athletes).

Make cold meals then. Is it really that hard to microwave stuff for a minute and a half at work?

UltraMet is easily the best tasting protein powder I have ever had. I only drink the low carb version, but they have a full carb version you could use as an MRP. The full carb version is your shake is MUCH thicker. Both are very satisfying. The catch is they are pretty expensive for a protein powder. I use it postworkout at work when I can enjoy the flavor. More expensive than most protein powders, but when you taste you will understand why.

My morning shake is PowerBlendz pure protein. 2nd best tasting protein powder I have had, cheaper than the UltraMet.

I have used Dymatize protein for a few years and like the flavors and they aren't as retarded about price as some companies are.

For what it's worth my opinion is that products like this are made to charge customers a premium when all they really need is cheap $4 a pound whey protein.

Edit: I check the food section over at slickdeals.net for protein deals. I buy my protein in bulk on the cheap because it's all about pennies per pound for me.

You can wait for another gnc coupon glitch. Usually buy 1 get 1 half off turns into buy 1 get 1 free and then you stack a coupon on top + gold card + mrrebates and you can get a killer deal. I think the last one was 20lbs of Myofusion for ~$90 shipped.

Thank you to those who have responded with recommendations and understand the convenience of a meal replacement shake, unlike those in this thread that are just being argumentative about whole foods being better. I'm well aware that whole foods are a better choice, but given how busy I am at work it is MUCH more convenient to have a shake 1-2 times a day as part of my 6 small meals.

However, after looking at the ingredients on those powders, it looks like they have just as much artificial ingredients in them as Myoplex. Would it be best to just keep mixing in fruit and veggies in my protein smoothies instead?

You can find unflavored/unsweetened whey protein from a few different places, but none of those products would be considered a "meal replacement".

Off the top of my head trueprotein.com offers unsweetened protein. Although the shipping is pricey.

Edit: I'm not sure if I responded to your question correctly. I have no issues with artificial ingredients and I don't mix anything with my protein supplements. I just eat my fruits and veggies and take a multivitamin.

Argumentative? Now where did you get that?

Everyone overestimates how busy they are. I was just offering suggestions that were plausible and would improve your overall health, not just meet your suggested protein requirement. Informative? Yes. Argumentative? Nope.
