Good reliable SSD?

So I dont have all that much experience with SSD's.

What are the best ones to get these days for reliability? Price? Im guessing Intel is still #1?

Looking for one in the 120gb-200gb range and below $150.

Is this Intel 330 series SSDSC2CT120A3K5 120GB good? Its $72 only on sale at this unknown site heh.? http://www.sabrepc.com/t-end-of-world-lightning-sale.aspx

Someone experienced give me some insight here.....

If you can find a Samsung 830 before they're all gone go for one of them. Probably the modern standard for SSD reliability. The newer Samsung's, the 840 and 840 Pro should also be reliable but they've had a bumpy ride into the market but I have no doubt Samsung will issue updates to fix any issues.

Plextor's M3 or M5 range of SSD's are also rock solid but generally more expensive. The m4 is also a solid choice as it's running the latest firmware.

If you are new to SSD's I would stick to an 830 or M3 or M5 series of SSD.

Intel ruined it for themselves. Its crucial M4 or Samsung 830 as the most reliable today. The SATA2 Intel SSD 320 is also superb. But due to going EOL its price is pretty bad to put it mildly, if you can even find it anymore. Plus it lacks performance.

Alright. Ill check out if there are any decent deals on that Samsung 830. I see many sites are out of stock.....

If they're out of stock then then it's a safe bet they won't be getting any more either. The 830's are being phased out and replaced with the 840 or 840 Pro.

Intel was a gold standard in SSD's but their record with the 320 and multiple reports of continuing BSOD's with their SandForce offering as lead many including me to exclude them from the absolute premium of SSD quality. It's certainly no coincidence that Intel have decided to invest again and make their own 6Gbps controller.

The Samsung 840 Pro might be good as well. But stay away from the non Pro at all cost. I wonder if Samsung is on the path to do the same as Intel. And throw it all on the ground.

There is nothing wrong in the SSD 840. If you actually do the math on TLC NAND life expectancy, you should realize that it will not be the limiting factor (unless you have a workload that is very write intensive, but then we are most likely talking about workstation or enterprise usage).

One bad SSD line and they ruined it for themselves?

Tuff Audience!

I think you could devote every article on the main page for a month on TLC NAND and people still wouldn't get this.

It should handle at least 10GB in writes a day IIRC, and most people barely have 500MB-1GB/day in writes.

If you are interested in one of the Intel X25's, here is a thread that will direct you to a 160 Gb X25-M for $120 - $30 rebate = $90 total.

I have several types of SSD's and the X25's - although not the fastest (especially on writes) are the ones that I trust above all of the others. I ordered one of these last week. They also had the 80 GB drives for $40 after rebate - don't know if that is still available or not.

That's a good deal. I've had the 120 Gb version for close to 2 years now with no problems. Especially good if you have older hardware that only supports SATA 1. You won't notice the performance hit and compared to an HDD it will be the difference between night and day.

Crap I might buy one. Oops! Too late.

those figures seem to be antiquated back to when we weren't all streaming media by the GB's in just a single logged on session.

Streaming media doesn't just pour into and stay in system RAM alone. You'd be amazed at what HD vids can do to create temp throttles an older first gen SF controlled SSD's.

Yeah I saw that already and am very tempted. 160GB for $90? Seems like a pretty good deal. Is that the first gen drive? Or is that the second gen?

2nd gen, just now received mine in the mail. The 02M3 firmware on the sticker is the most current.

Because its an OEM, I suppose that means I have to buy some tray separately to mount this(intel x25-m ssd)? I obviously do not have one.........

I have OCZ, intel and samsung. If I had to choose I would have gone for samsung. I love the Samsung SSD Magician Software <3 ()🙂

Get A-DATA SSD pr Sandisk JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!! those are the worst two..... my dads a-data is about to die.....anyhow,

get
Crucial
Samsung and let those be your only options. gl

I missed the 830's but I did get a couple of the Plextor 128Gb M3's for around $70.00 about the same time as BF. Wish I had gone with the 830's instead.

Well, I ordered the Intel X25-m 160gb SSD. Hopefully it was a good choice at $90AR.

I do see Ncix has the Intel 330 180gb for $120 with no rebate. Not sure if its better to spend the extra $30 for 20gb more space and a faster ssd but.... I am a cheap bastard, I always go for whats on sale. heh.

I guess I need to get a 2.5 - 3.5 tray mount for this, which looks to be like $10ish.

Is the Intel 330 still a fairly reliable drive? I see so many people with issues with SSD's, I just want one reliable. I wonder if the Intel 330 180 at $120 is the better buy...
