Good red wine for an alcohol noob

Which wines should you consume to reap the most benefits?

Researchers at the University of California, at Davis tested a variety of wines to determine which types have the highest concentrations of flavonoids. Their results concluded that the flavonoid favorite is Cabernet Sauvignon, followed closely by Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir. Both Merlots and red zinfandels have fewer flavonoids than their more potent predecessors. White wine had significantly smaller amounts than the red wine varieties. The bottom line is the sweeter the wine, the fewer the flavonoids. Dryer red wines are your best bet for a flavonoid boost.

There is still a lot of debate in this area tho.

You might also look into boxed wines. they tend to last longer since they are pretty much sealed from air.

imo you should do a controlled experiment to find out if its just the alcohol or if it actually is the red wine.
1. with a glass of water
2. with a glass of some other wine
3. with a glass of some other alcohol
4. with a glass of red wine

I've seen this at Costco for less than $10 a bottle and it is quite good for the money.

2nd this one.

it's been on Bevmo's 5cent sale the last two times, as well. yum.

I'm with you OP. I hate wine. Only wine I've ever liked is the really sweet stuff, like port. I've given it plenty of second chances. Tried many different wines. They're all equally astringent and unpalatable to me. The only way I'd be able to drink wine would be to either slam it like bad medicine or to mix it with water.

Unfortunately it sounds like dry wine is the best for you? What about adding sugar syrup to it to make it easier to drink? Hell I should try that with some Two Buck Chuck, maybe help my own health a bit.

Is it a good idea to be drinking wine with your medication?

Well, like I said I asked the doctor and it's not contraindicated in my giant freaking codex gigas of a medicine description with which the stuff came. What I don't like is that I can't take NSAIDs or use salt substitutes.

Also I've been peeing like crazy. 😛

What'd they prescribe you? I only got 50mg metoprolol (1x daily), so other than being a little bit tired, I'm fine. Not peeing a lot or anything. Did you get a combo pill with a beta blocker and hydrochlorothiazide? That will definitely make you pee a lot.

Like you, my doctor had no problem with me drinking. After the diagnostics, he said its not even clear why my blood pressure is high, so outside of weight loss, we'll see. I still drink coffee a couple times a day too. No NSAIDs, but Tylenol is ok, IIRC.

Also, I picked up a bottle of Blackstone Pinot Noir (2009) tonight. Not bad for $12.

Benazepril and hydrochlorothiazide. The effect has been stunning. My BP was down to 128/88 this morning. I doubt it has ever really been that low before since I was a child.

Also, another friend told me that friend #1 was crazy and liked bad wine. Crazy kids. I'm going to try cabernet savignon next, I think.

The half-life of metoprolol is only about four to six hours. Unless its one of those extended/controlled release formulations, beta blockers need to be taken 2 x daily.

OP, I would also recommend that you take an Omega complex (3,6,9) and Alpha Lipoic Acid supplement.

It's an extended release. Don't worry, I'm not retarded and neither is my physician 🙂 I even eat when I take it to increase bioavailability.

Have they diagnosed a root cause to your high blood pressure, or are they just calling it essential hypertension?

If you're looking for cabernet, I mentioned it before, but try to find Forestville. Definitely my favorite "cheap" California Cab. Should be no more than $10 per bottle. Closer to $6 around here, I usually have the store order it for me.

while i'm not a wine connoisseur by any means, for me liking reds was a bit of an acquired taste.

it may help to include the glass of wine with your meal as opposed to having the glass by itself.

Please note that Spaceman took the time to post the 18% Red Grape, and not that bitch 13% version that's prevalent these days.

However, if we're recommending Mad Dog, I have to insist on Banana Red or Orange Jubilee. Those are fine flavors, and are still reddish wines.

Well, I've tried a few different kinds:

2009 Shiraz - Horrendous
2008 Cabernet Sauvingon - Not bad
2008 Pinot Noir - Smells nice until it oxidizes and literally smells like machine oil

I guess Merlot is next.

Don't just go by Varietal. You can get shitty shirz, cabernet, pino, and you can get good shiraz, cab, and pinot. It all depends on the year, winery and region.

Go to a good wine store and talk to the employees. Go to a wine tasting. Buy wine magazines. Don't just pick randomly from the grocery store and then make blanket judgements on entire grapes.

Well, the first one was from talking to a friend, the second from talking to the employee, and the third was random. Unfortunately, my wine selection is limited and it is illegal for me to go into Louisiana (where the selection is way better) and buy wine to bring back.
