heh, I was using a $250 beltronics 985 for a while after which I went to a whistler 1743 on clearance at walmart for $30 and they both work about the same.

Something is seriously wrong with your 985 then. The 985 is WAY better than any Whistler model out there...

Police have a new radar out called "POP" Alert or something... not sure on the specifics on it but you might want to get one that alarms for that as well

Just because there is newer radar out doesn't mean they have it yet. New radar or laser guns cost money, and it's not like they instanlty upgrade their whole inventory when something new comes out. The State Police here JUST got KA units last year...and the local cops still use K band. There is almost zero laser gun usage in my state....the state troopers only have a couple as of yet...

Here in Austin, TX alot of cops have the laser gun... it scares the crap out of my pants every time because the radar doesnt start beeping gradually... all the sudden it blares out at the highest setting....BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP...

Yeah, I guess it really depends on the area you live and how much they budget for speed enforcement. In my state, they recently tried to introduce a bill that would allow photo radar stations and red light cameras (they are illegal per state law), and it was killed before it hit the floor.

*shrug*

Laser has been around for awhile though. I'm sure the whole Austin police force didn't get all new laser guns as soon as they came out though...unless of course they were one of the departments Geico "donated" them to...:frown:

The Escort 8500 is the best radar detector you can own if you want it for city protection above highway protection.

The Valentine 1 is the best radar detector you can own if you want it for highway protection versus city driving.

Although both are still really good at the other, and the Escort is 100+ cheaper. Its what I have and it roxx.

Valentine 1's range has been beaten by units from Bel and Escort. That thing hasn't been redesigned in YEARS....

I guess once you are deemed #1, people seem to think you are FOREVER.

How about those nifty arrows to show you the direction of the signal....WOW THAT'S SO COOL.

;):p

Except for the fact it wouldn't matter if they were to your sides...last time I checked, radar has to be in front or behind you (with special radar guns) to detect your speed. Perpendicular doesn't work....

... so if the cop hits the side of your car it doesnt matter, so that means they park perpendicular and then fire up or down the road?

I drive mostly in rush hour, 170 miles round trip, and i think a detector wouldnt matter because everyone is speeding and ive seen 4 people pulled over in 2 weeks so far out of thousands and thousands

But i am moving to the 10am-7pm shift and the traffic is less packed..... i made a poll on this a few days ago, but I figured I would be MORE likely to get singled out if I had a detector in my window.

But with a detector you already slowed down before they read your speed. That's the whole point of having it. With a good one you are aware of the radar for miles before you even get within the policeman's sight.

They are invaluable IMHO. Because even if you are going with the flow of traffic you won't get nailed...it will be the guys speeding past you.

I was lucky enough to be one of the first people too see a $40 shipped deal for a $170 Whistler DE1765C here at FW but it won't ship until August 20-something. It was dead in a matter of minutes, I can't wait to use it on the streets of Philly, should definately come in handy. Does anyone have this model or could tell me how reliable it is?

Since I bought my Bel radar detector in 2001, I've not gotten one speeding ticket. It is very quick to respond.

There are somethings in life that you don't buy just based on price alone...

these items include toilet paper, trash bags and radar detectors...
I buy the cheapest trash bags I can find and have yet to have a problem.. lol
