Are some radar detectors better than others? If so, any specific ones people reccomend?

thanks

Just be aware that cops aren't stupid. If your radar detector goes off, it's very possible that they already got you.

Just be smart and don't call attention to yourself. Be reasonable and the cops will be too. Most of the time. Some aren't. :)

I love my Whistler. I got it for $80 and it works just as well as my dad's $200+ Escort Passport. Plus it is a talking one so it tells me what band it picked up without me needing to look.

You're not going to like this, but leave earlier and don't drive so fast. If you're not the fastest one on the road, you probably won't get a ticket.
You have no idea what it does to you when you are *always* in a hurry....seriously.

heh, I was using a $250 beltronics 985 for a while after which I went to a whistler 1743 on clearance at walmart for $30 and they both work about the same.

I just noticed the prices on them

Looking into the whistler :p

There are somethings in life that you don't buy just based on price alone...

these items include toilet paper, trash bags and radar detectors...

I've started looking into this, I'm definitely leaning towards the escort 8500 x50, due to price and availability in addition to performance, but I have reservations about its laser abilities. Any thoughts on this?

Don't speed.

Also - why get a radar detector... which tells you they have nailed you - when you can get a radar jammer which would prevent them from doing anything to you?

well, radar jammers are illegal and don't work, according to Radar Roy ;)

I don't usually speed day-to-day, but I want one for road trips.

This is the advise I will give you, take it or not thats up to you.

Cheap radars do not work. By the time the cheap radar starts ringing, you are practically next to the cop that clocked you. Keep in mind cops can clock you from miles away IF they want too.... so basically you need a radar that will detect the k and ka bands that the cops emit from a far distance. 2 of the most reputable brands that work are valentine one or escort 8500's... there are more expensive ones.... but they go into the thousands...

so the moral of the story is... radars are something you can't go cheap on... if your going to go cheap... then dont get an radar... because your wasting your money.

Update: I forgot to add in, when cops use their laser (device that is capable of clocking you miles away) alot (even expensive ones) will only detect it when the laser is triggered.... so it makes it harder for you to detect if the cop is clocking speeds.... something to think about....

Story

Not so long ago I was late to work so I was going a little over speed limit (luckily) and all the sudden my escort 8500 went berserk.. it displayed laser beam on the led screen... the cop that was clocking was like maybe 50 ft away... I lucked out on that one... but Im sure he would of pulled me over if I was going a little bit faster because he was giving me a dirty look.

heheheheh sorry had a typo

godmare,

The escort 8500 is an excellent radar not sure about the x50, but Im going to assume its good also... works really well... but like I wrote in my previous post, when they bust out with the laser it will be harder to detect where they are.

Something to do some research on....

I remember I came across a debate about corded and cordless (at the time I was looking for the best radar on my motorcycle). I think the consensus was that corded radars work better then cordless... but im not 100% sure about this... so do you research laddy's.

Heres a good resource

I have had really great results with my Escort 8500 X50.

Pick 'em up over a few miles. Over hills.

Good laser detection (had it go off a few times)

Valentine is overpriced and out of date...

The best bet is either a high end Bel-Tronics or a Escort 8500...
