Good quality speakers?

oh i'm sure they make the sub of pressboard. only total garbage subs are made of plastic really. pressboard isn't a bad thing at all, its consistent throughout and strong, i don't think they make subs with natural wood. its just a matter of how dense and how thick the pressboard is. more is better obviously, so thats probably where they cut corners for the price.

as for dissapointing, you do need a larger sub for quality sound without the boominess. perhaps bigger midrange drivers as well. klipsch used to have a sweet set called the ifi's for the ipod that used a large sub and sats from their home theater line with big 3.5" midrange. course it cost much more than 100 dollars.

I can only echo previous opinions.

I have the logitech z-5300's and they rock, good deal for the money.
If I just wanted 2.1 sound I would go for the Klipsch Promdia 2.1's. They also rock and are a good deal for the money.

EDIT: Normally they both go for over a hunred, but if you dig around you may find them cheaper. For a while Newegg was selling the Logitechs for about your price. Right now they are too much

Only other option is a cheap home theater system, and in the sub 100 buck range you wont find much quality.

those are worse than low end creative/logitech speakers now really. they were ok speakers a decade ago. even the soundworks has aged poorly

I had Cambridge Soundworks' first 2.1 pc speakers in the '90s. $300 and they were so much better than any other pc speaker that I thought they were worth it. Of course, the price was $150 a year later - the price one pays for early adoption/lack of patience. Still have them but they're white so they've been relegated to the workbench. I remember setting them on top of some $1000/pair speakers and with an a/b switch on a medium quality 200w amp some people couldn't tell the difference at low-medium levels. Since Soundworks was bought out, quality has been replaced with mass market mentality. I feel the Klipsch's are slightly better.

It would be interesting to know aceO07's opinion of the klipsch's. I guess no news is good news... It's always iffy recommending something as subjective as speakers.

Logitech Z-2200 or Z-2300 2.1 or Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 are good choices. Klipsch is a bit more accurate in terms of sound, but the Logitech has fuller bass. I own the Klipsch speakers and I like them a lot. Logitech's volume/power control is nice though. These are really $150 speakers, but you should be able to find a decent deal on them. Check eBay or AnandTech's FS/FT forums.

I've always wondered why there are no pc speakers with sleep/wakeup power circuitry. I would be willing to pay a little more for it.

yea i had those too. oddly enough they were called the "micro" soundworks i believe even though they were the biggest computer set. they were good for their time but now they sound harsh and the bass is weak, and the voume control things always degraded and then broke😛

yea creative stopped any improvement in soundworks line, its just been downhill🙁

Werd. Those are low end and terrible. you would only think that way if you came from $5 speakers. I thought they were godlike until I got Z-2300s. Those aren't even that great too.

I say for under $100 I would get the Z-2300s. You'll have to wait for a sale though. If you're lucky and can get the Kilpsch 2.1 ProMedias by all means go for it.

Nothing. You just won't use 3 or 5 of the output jacks. There are still jacks for the front and subwoofer that you use for 2.1 speakers.
