In my opinion they are roughly equal to both depending on what you buy. I used to live in Burlington and went to their store often. Ihated their dark chocolate (tasteless wax to me) but their milk was pretty good.
I had an old roommate that managed a Godiva store and I visited his store. They get the chocolates in huge UPS boxes and then they package them pretty at the store. The stuff is decent, but not exceptional.
Godiva is about 50% chocolate and 50% ad campaign. They use the same fillers and preservatives as commodity chocolate makers.
Iif you live in NYC, try here to ... I have heard ardent fans of them refer to Godiva as "Snickers in gold wrappers". They are the best chocolate I have ever had. Period. But...they are roughly $70 a pound. So, if you have to have the best, head to Rockefeller center, otherwise, the others are fine, but none stands out above the others to me.
I'd recommend any mixture with the "chocolates of Vermont" box in it--these are their best chocolates, IMO. I live in VT, been eating these for years. Their fruit and nut bar is my personal favorite. Definitely premium chocolate, but chocolate seems to be very subjective. I tend toward See's or Lake Champlain, but I won't turn my nose up at a Hershey bar, either 🙂
