After lots and lots of research, I chose this one:

Enermax 460W from ZipZoomFly

VERY heavy, high quality psu - fan controller - thick heavy shielding on the main power lines - extra shielded molex for video. All that plus ZZF has free shipping! 😀

note: grab it while it has the $5 rebate! I missed it :frown:

Edit: forgot to mention 33 amps on the +12 volt line!

You shouldn't have gotten that one. The only Enermax PSU's i would buy are the Noisetakers. That regular Enermax is tested at 25C. a condition which 99% of PSU's wont even come close to. Along with some other cheap components that seperate it from the noisetaker series (lower efficiency).

You should have taken the advice we gave you instead of completely ignoring it.

That ENERMAX (as long as FMA) a good PSU don't listen to these guys. Nothing can touch it at that price. Talk to exdeath, pm him if you like, he's running two overclcoked 6800 ultras and a FX-55 Oc'ed off it and a bunch of drives and other stuff like water pumps etc..

BUt Zebo remember what conditions they test this under. Yes the Noistaker and the Whisper series are very nice PSU's. However the regular Enermax PSU's are not nearly as nice and are tested under unreal conditions (25C!?!). The Noisetakers are tested under 40C IIRC. Among that they "cut corners" or skimp on certain small things on the regular PSU's to make the Noisetaker so much better.

As for the fans, dont worry. You cant hold anything against a company for using 80mm over 120mm. Not a pro or a con.

Well, where do I begin? First of all, I linked to the wrong one - my bad. It's the same thing only with a different paint job, FCA and a fan controller. The blue one. Anyway, for what it's worth the one I have is the "Whisper" series and it has a 92mm (thermally controlled) and a 80mm fan (manually controlled). By the way, aren't Noisetakers dual rail? If so, that's not what I need.

Anyway, as for the advice issue, what exactly did I ignore?? I really have no idea whose advice you mean because I've had many different psus recommended to me over the past several weeks. I mean, I've posted threads here and asked IT people I know for advice. I've also read and re-read most of the threads with subjects related to power supplies. Because my choice is based on more than just what I've learned here on the forums, I may not always go with exactly what any one person suggests - sorry dude. What amazes me is I offer input on a good psu and I still get flamed! If you don't like the Enermax I chose, how about this one: a friend of mine paid $30 for this 580w Powmax and he highly recommends it. I mean, take a good look at the feedback on Newegg for that bad boy! 386+ with a 5-star rating??? So come on man, I spent $80 on a good psu for a decent machine and I'm happy. What else needs to be said?

Yes, I agree. And thanks.

Uh-oh. You're going to get flamed again. 😛

If you want the maximum "Pow" for your system, when it blows up, definately get a "PowMax". They are quite aptly named.

PS. NewEgg moderates and removes negative reviews. So the presence of only positive ones is not a surprise.

I'm not recommending the Powmax, but my friend has had his for a while and is very happy with it. I had the 480w version myself for over a year and it ran fine up until I really loaded it down. At that point the system would freeze or restart - no smoke, fire or even brimstone. 😀 Again I didn't buy one this time and I'm not telling people to, but I really find it hard to believe that they all explode. More likely they just don't hold up well under a heavy load.

As for the reviews on Newegg, you may be right but I have seen negative reviews on there plenty of times for other products. It's the sheer number of reviews that gets me. I mean, the last time I saw numbers like that was for some Coolermaster fans I was looking at. At any rate, they're apparently selling like hotcakes!

Well the fact that you linked to the wrong product kind of throws my entire post off
You're right - my fault. But I have to ask, is the one I bought different from the first one I linked? Except for the "FCA" designation, they both have the same model number: the silver one I linked first was an Enermax EG465P-VE 460W and the blue one I bought is an Enermax EG465P-VE FCA 460W. I'm not trying to be argumentative here, but I'd like to know because I thought I was paying a few extra bucks just for the fan controller and a blue paint job. Is there difference in the quality of parts used between the two?

Also, someone mentioned a 480w Tagan for $78.99 earlier. That was one I seriously considered, but in the end I chose the Enermax because it had a few more features: bottom fan, fan controller, heavy shielding on the main power lines, shielded extra molex for video, and more amps on the +12v rail for roughly the same price. Is the Tagan better and, if so why? Thanks.
