Good Power supply brands?

It's been a long time since I've needed to buy a power supply. I'm currently looking at a Thermaltake and a cooler master. I was looking at these because I recognize the name, they have pretty good specs, and a decent price. Then I raised these are heat sink manufactures, when did they start making power supplies?

So are these good ones to get? If not what would you recommend?

They're alright, but definitely not as good as some others. I'd recomend FSP (Fortron), Seasonic, OCZ and Antec.

This is just a normal comp, Athlon 64 3000+ with a Radeon 9800, but I'd like to be able to keep the PSU for a while even after I upgrade.

For refference here are the two I was looking at:
Edit: odd anandtech must block cheif value links, here they are on new egg, just higher priced.

Thermaltake

Cooler Master

Links are borked, Torghn.

The Fortron/ Sparkle line of products exists at the point of diminished returns. Very few are actually any better, and those cost considerably more. Many are inferior, and cost less, or even the same. Can't go wrong with a Fortron, they're the standard against which everything else is judged...

I personally would stay away from Antec and Seasonic.
Both companies have had issues in the past with bad CAPs.

Instead I would probably go the Fortron route since your on a budget.
Fortron makes a top notch CPU!!
Not much bling bling...just good solid performance!!

Thanks for the replies, has any one here had experince with In Win Powerman? I've never heard of them, but this PSU has the best stats I've seen as for as efficence and Power factor Correction.

IIRC those PowerMan's are rebadged Sparkles. At least they were 4-5 years ago when I used them in builds. 😛

you should check out the specs before jumping on that one....
I would run from that I WIN...just look at the specs for the 12v rails...+3.3V@22A, +5V@21A, +12V1@14A, +12V2@13A, -12V@0.6A, +5VSB@2.5A

both 12v rails not good at all!!

When it comes to PSu`s you truly get what you pay for....
at $33.00 you are truly taking your life into your hands.....
I know the price looks right but i have seen no review of this PSU and just by taking a quick glance at the specs...
I would say run forest run...

Can`t go wrong with this CPU...

FSP Group (Fortron Source) AX450-PN ATX12V 450W Power Supply 115/230 V NEMKO, TUV, CSA, IEC, UL, CE - Retail -- $49.99!!!
As Ribbon13 already pointed out!!

For that price range you should definatly go with Fortron. I would avoid Thermaltake, my 420w died after 3 days. Coolermaster isn't at the top of my list either. My fortron has given me no trouble, and was reasonably priced.

XClio is rarely ever mentioned(mentioned once in this thread), but i've really only heard good reviews of them. Is there a reason?

xclio's are more or less antecs, as they are made by channel well antecs supplier. i've used them and never had any issues. t

Hiper Type-R. Amazing PSU's. SLi ready. 580W. Dual 12V rails, each with 18A. I bought the red one and it just looks plain sick. However the specs listed on mine say 20A and 18A on the rails. 😀

Forton's a good choice if you're on a budget and you want a robust unit. They have a reputation for quality and their parts are still reasonably priced. I've had no experience with the xclio but people say good things about them.

Fortron/FSP.. I use them for replacements at work for when any of the cheapo ones die... They never have to be replaced again it seems, after they get replaced with an FSP.

Are you fscking kidding me? Seasonic is the DFI of Powersupplies. All Japanese caps.

Hmmm where did you get the specs for the Hiper? I was looking at their website when choosing my new PSU and they have no specs listed....if i'd seen the ampages listed I'd have been tempted to buy one but with none on the website I decided not to risk it and go for an Enermax Liberty 500w modular PSU with:

+3.3V ~ 28A
+5V ~ 30A
+12V1 ~ 22A
+12V2 ~ 22A
+3.3V, +5V, +12V1, +12V2 Combined = 477.8W
-12V ~ 0.6A
+5Vsb ~3A
Total Power
500W

Someone should really tell Hiper that they'd sell more models by adding the specs to the website.
