Good places to travel alone

I'm a 26 yr. old male, with a girlfriend that uses all her vacation time to visit her parents that are out of state. Pretty much all my friends can't afford to travel, don't like to travel, or I just don't want to travel with them.

So I'm stuck wanting to visit places, but likely would have to do it myself. I'm looking for suggestions of good places to go. (I live in NY)

I figure somewhere that has a lot of "touristy" sites would be good. (I spent some time in England by myself, which was fine) Somewhere like Vegas might be bad, since there's no one there to keep an eye on me to prevent me from being stupid in Sin City.

I'm not overly outgoing, but I'm not an introvert either. Any ideas would be great. Thanks.

How about a European destination? I really enjoyed Salzburg.

Well I'm heavily considering doing a Contiki tour to somewhere in Europe, perhaps Greece. However, those tours don't start til March or so. I'm itching to go somewhere sooner, as I've got about 18 days of vacation just lying around.

Eighteen vacation days...wow. What's your budget looking like for this expedition?

No real budget, as long as I can justify the pricing. I'd say roughly though, I'd put my max at about $2,000.

Buy a mountain bike and go find places to bike at:

You could even join a club. Tons of fun, not to expensive other than start up costs and it helps get you back to nature.

do contiki.

my wife went on 2 or 3 when she was single and loved all of them. she met some cool people and still stays in contact with them.

EDIT: i think she did the spain tour, the italy tour and maybe a 3rd.

how about a long back packing trip... you'll meet people along the way.

Yeah I don't know if I'm quite ready for something like that. I need someplace that has enough 'must-see' things (besides nature) to keep me busy.

Are you serious?

Go to Glacier park (fly in and out of whitefish I believe) in Montana. plan on hiking 8-10 miles a day, with a 60-75 pound pack, and you will see must sees every hour. This amount of walking will can take you over mountain passes every other day, all the way up into canada, then back down along the continental divide.

vegas..oh wait you said you want someone to keep an eye on you. 🙂 though it is an excellent place to go alone.

Yeah, Vegas, as well as Amsterdam as mentioned above are two places I prob. would want someone there with me to make sure I don't wake up in a ditch naked, or next to some woman I don't know (g/f prob. wouldn't like that).. 😉

Any of the ski towns in CO are good places to visit alone. You can snowboard all day, and party all night. Steamboat is a pretty good place for that. Talk to the lift operators or ski patrol (young ones) about where to hang out at night. Most of them are students at the local college, so they have pretty good ideas and can be a good connection for you.

Thanks for the suggestions. Hawaii is my planned destination for my honeymoon, whenever that'll be.

Damn you guys tho'! I've been eyeing the Contiki Amsterdan trip for awhile, but I don't trust myself all the time, so yeah, like silverpig said, I too would prob. end up coming back from there pregnant as well...

CO isn't a bad idea. I just started trying to snowboard (I still suck) earlier this year, tho' I'm an okay skiier.
