Good places for desserts in Manhattan?

My gf is in culinary school at the French Culinary Institute, and one of her assignments is to review a dessert served at a restaurant or bakery. I'm not talking about cookies or ice cream, I'm talking about plated desserts. Any gourmands here know of a great place in NY for dessert?

Cafe Lalo in upper west side (eighties). Next to major theater up there. Very good desserts. ALWAYS chock full of people.

yea, that's a nice little place. i went there when i visited new york a couple years ago.

if i recall correctly, that's where they filmed parts of the movie 'you got mail'.

chikalicious is a dessert bar on 10th between 2nd and 1st. VERY GOOD. check out their website.Text, its a 4 course desser for 12 bucks prix fixe. $7 extra for a wine pairing....

also WD-50 in the LES on clinton street has some interesting desserts.

Just gotta know someone's going to say Serendipity so it may as well be now... but the place is always packed. Be ready for a 45 minute wait... just for dessert.

Cafe Lalo is decent, but by far much worse than some of the better places further downtown

Serendipity = over-hyped and not very good desserts

Veniero's = a NYC classic, but doesn't have a huge variety

juniors...how can anyone miss that.

also the hungarian pastry shop by columbia uni...been there twice and it's pretty good imo

Veniero's is OK, but I perfer Lalo.

I've never been to Serendipity, but I also here it's overrated compared to the other two.

Now, if one wants to really splurge, Daniel's desserts are considered the best in the City. Their pastry chef has one int'l awards. Their desserts remind me of what you can get in Europe.
