Good place to get a laptop?

I have to take care of an ailing relative for long stretches of time and since this takes me away from home I am interested in getting a laptop to put a few games on to put some fun in my spare time. I have looked at Sager but I can't find one that has 512 mb of ram and an ATI video chip for my price range. Are there any other online stores that might be good? I am hesitant to buy from the Trade/Sale forum because I need to use my credit card. Thanks.

Try ebay and look for IBM direct. Have bought several R40 centrinos for around $1000 direct from IBM with a credit card. All the ones I got were new but they could also come as overstock returns etc in new condition. They are usually abudant when newer models are introduced. Come with full IBM new waranty and service which is second to none.

When I went shopping for a laptop last year, I spent about two weeks going to every computer and electronics store in my city. I had the salesmen unlock the laptops and let me really work with them. With a desktop PC you can always buy a different keyboard, mouse, or even monitor. But with a laptop, you're locked in. So I made sure to spend a lot of time looking and trying before I bought.

IBM direct on ebay

Sometimes you have to look for a week but they can come in bunches. Other dealers are good too, with decent feedback. IBM stands behind there stuff. If you have never bought ibm new before and have to use their support, you will be amazed at how great it is. They overnited me fedex prepaid shipping label and had laptop back, repaired in 4 days (on xmas eve morning) all at absolutely no cost. Awesome.
By comparison, a middlemanagement Gateway employee has been waiting 3 month's for his repair and he works for them. He at least should have the good phone numbers.

$1500 won't get you a lappy that can play games.
The Sager 8790 was the first that could play Farcry and BF42.
The Dell XPS came out next and upped the bar.
Now the Sager 9860 is the top of the line, which can play HL2, and D3.
I know it sux, but to get a gaming lappy, you have to spend 3k. I was interested in getting one, but stayed with the desktop instead.

Check out toshiba

I got a Toshiba. I looked at Best Buy, CompUSA and a few other places. I wanted something off the shelf and looked for the best one that had a decent video chip with dedicated memory. So many of them had shared memory. Well, I got one and a year later ended up getting a Dell and giving this one to my wife as the video just didn't cut it. So, be careful what ya get!

I found the right place and I have the funds, but which cpu should I go for: centrino (low heat), amd64 or intel p4? I want this to be a mostly gaming thing but I don't want it to go to volcano temperatures.

I've been trying to find out the same thing! From what I gather he Pentium-M is pretty rockstar w 2mb lv 2 cache, but does it beat an athlon?
