No.

Palm is a company that makes both a PDA and a PDA OS and both are called Palm. Other companies have licensed the Palm OS, the two most notable are Handspring and Sony. The new Sony Clie PCG-NR70 is a wonderful device that includes flip open keyboard and MP3 player.

PocketPC is any PDA running the Microsoft PocketPC OS. The PocketPC is much more processor intensive with 200+MHz processors instead of the 33MHz common on PalmOS devices. They are also more multimedia capable than Palm though Palm still has more software available to it. One of the significant differences for me with PocketPC is the networking capability. It has real TCP/IP networking allowing for direct web surfing and best of all, Remote Access to my WinXP box. It's slow and the screen is cramped considering most sites are designed for at least 800x600, but it's workable and you don't need some reformatting service or WAP enabled site.

There are other PDAs on the market like the Franklin organizer, but they are bit players in a limited market.

With color screens both Palm and PocketPC have lower battery life than the old B/W PDAs with average time in the hours instead of days/months level.

No PDA today has good handwriting recognition. At least not compared to the Apple Newton. Both Palm and PocketPC have a special character set you can learn that enables you to write almost normally with block letters. There is add-on software, often included with various PocketPC models, that supposedly allows "natural" handwriting recognition, but in my experience it doesn't work that well.

I wasn't including the treo - it's a cell phone.

Anyways, he's right about normal handwriting. You sort of have to learn the "language" of handwriting for a Palm, but in my experience, I messed around for 15 minutes and had it down pat. It wasn't a problem, and they recognize the Palm language fine.

Anyways, the Ipaqs and Pocket PCs actually let you leave handwritten notes on them, so you CAN always write yourself a note in your handwriting.

One more thing, LCD or TFT screen? I know what each one is, but which is... better? I've always wondered about this one.

Hmm, I see. So assuming I want a pocket PC with tons of RAM and a fast CPU, what would you choose?

i'd say you go with palm. firstly because, it has great battery life. secondly, has a huge software archive. I'm totally against IPAQ coz. they consume too much battery life and are too expensive. Who would want to view Divx, movies and stuff on a handheld device when the sole aim is to have an organizer?

Just my opinion

That's YOU. Different people have different uses for PDAs. From my other thread, and I quote:

use my PDA for just about everything when I'm on the go.

I use my PDA for wireless 802.11b in various locations at home and at work
I play MP3's, RM, WMA, MPEG, DIVX, ASF, AVI, etc. (with PocketTV, PocketDIVX, RealPlayer One, & Windows Media Player)
I use it to read Adobe files
Keep track of my accounts with Money 2002
I use Excel, Word, and PowerPoint software (comes in handy in class with powerpoint slides)
I use Avantgo and Mazingo for offline webpage browsing
I use 802.11b for wireless surfing with Pocket Internet Explorer
I use Telnet and FTP programs to access my campus accounts
I use Macromedia flash for flash programs
I use PocketStreets 2002 and have maps of ever major city in the US on my memory card
I play all my games (ZioGolf2, Turjah II, SimCity 2000, Snails, Argentum, Tennis Addict, plus all my NES ROMS with PocketNES)
I use Terminal Services to remotely control my desktop from anywhere
I use Unit converter for what else....unit conversion
I use Resco Zipper for my zip files
I use Resco Explorer and Picture Viewer for obvious reasons
I use NYDITOT to rotate my screen in landscape and use resolutions like 360x480, 640x480 etc.

Just because YOU don't use your PDA for much more than PIM stuff doesn't mean that the rest of us have to be lopped off at the nuts :D

240x320 resolution... hmmm...
NFS, what's that thing at the bottom for changing resolutions? I'm guessing this Genio can recognize handwriting, too...

These two proggies allow you to change your screen to ANY resolution:

NYDITOT Virtual Display

Jimmy Software Landscape 3.03

Yes, ANY PocketPC can handle hand recognition. Not only does PocketPC2002 have Palm's handwriting technology (Grafiti), but it also has Jot and Transcriber.

The Toshiba's out now are quite nice, but yes there are more models coming; hopefully for the holiday season.

BTW, NFS4 goes through PDAs like other people go through paper napkins.
