Must have a color screen, and the ability to recognize handwriting and turn it into text. Begin the listing, price doesn't matter, I just need some general ideas. Also, Palm OS or M$ OS?

Can that recognize handwriting?

i'm pretty sure they all can. My old cassopiea 115e can do it--- so i'm sure a new ipaq can. not to mention they're sooo cool looking.

of course-- i like the little fold out keyboards the best-- they make thigns way easier.

well, if you like battery life, get a palm. The M515 has a great screen and battery life.

I'm such a freak about battery life. and size. If I were to get a CE based PDA, I'd get the toshiba e310.

toshiba even makes PDAs?
damn.. didnt know that.
-- and i thinkt he handwriting recognition thing is actually just sofware running on the pda-- so any PDA out there could have the software installed, and it should then be able to do it.

more info on the ipaqs

i'm not a big fan of the palmOS. pocket pc is way better, even the battery life really really sucks-- its not that big a deal becuase i never got more than 4 -5 hours of continous use at a time away from an outlet

The handwriting recognition is called Graffiti, at least on Palm OS it is. It's basically the same as normal handwriting, but, it's *sorta* different

here, it has a table of characters and strokes to get them
Also, on screen (speaking of Palm OS--I have a Visor) it has an onscreen keyboard, so yuo can bring it up if you don't like grafitti, and just tap the letters yuo want, and it'll type that way.

If you're going to use it strictly as a planner, simple doc reader/editor, offline webapge reading.....nothing beats the Palm for simplicity.

If you want to get into video, MP3, audiobooks, WiFi connectivity, and more higher end features, get a Pocket PC.

The Pocket PC OS has built in handwriting recognition. You can even write in cursive! I have poor handwriting, but I've found the Pocket P to do a good job deciphering my chicken scratch. The Palm OS has "Graffiti", where you are writing one letter at a time, in a standardized format. Good for short notations.

I bought a M515 over the summer and I love it. I would highly recommend it. If you're looking for portability (something small that you might forget you even have) it will kill an ipaq. After I bought it I did a bit more research and actually came to the conclusion I would have been happier with the Clie with the 320x320 pixel display. Not a big deal but it would have saved me $100. You'll have to make that decision on your own. If you want functionality other than a planner, you may want to consider a Pocket PC device.

That's what I was thinking with the software... compaq is sort of out of the question... would you guys recommend Palm OS or the M$ one? More ram or more cpu power?

the way i explain it to people is like this:

Palm = overacheiving planner

Pocket PC = a few notches under a laptop. a "pocket" PC

Get an @migo 600C. Go to URthere.com for more info. It is essentially an Ipaq with a built in PCMCIA card sleve, but thinner. I'm happy with mine. It comes with PocketPC 2000, but you can upgrade to PPC 2002 with the widely available upgrade patch.

try out the handwriting recognition first.....it can be a hassle carrying around a keyboard. the foldable one is essentially the same size as the PDA. the recognition is suprisingly accurate.

don't forget to go to your local electronic store and play w/ the models before choosing :) that's half the fun

I sell PDAs sometimes at the store I work at, so I know a good deal. I'll pass on the most important points:

What you buy should depend on what you're looking for.

Palm OS handhelds:
If you just need an organizer, an address/phone book, and a calender planner, go with a Palm OS handheld. They'll do everything you need, it'll be smaller in size, and it'll save you money.

Don't get a Handspring Visor; they're overpriced and slow and obsolete. The Prism is nice and slim, though (although it's B&W display).
Palms and Sony Clies are both good. Most people prefer the Clies - they have better screens (better looking, more reactive) and are faster in general, although usually a bit more pricey.

Pocket PC handhelds:
Pocket PC is nice (almost like a small laptop), but they're pricey, and a bit more bulky. If you're looking for more than an organizer, you should consider one of these. They have faster processors, run a version of Windows, and include pocket Word, pocket Excel, etc - so you can edit or take your work with you. Battery life is getting much better in these, too. You can even play MP3s and video files with these. There's even ways of playing DivX movies (although you need enough memory to hold them ;) ) Internet Explorer also comes with these, and you can buy a wireless LAN card that slides into a Compact Flash expansion port. It's great for web browsing if you're in an area that has wireless internet.

HP Jornadas have the best touch-screen.
Compaq Ipaqs have the best displays - brilliant, bright, just like a computer screen. They're also very powerful and expandable and attractive - but very expensive.
There's many other good Pocket PCs out there, but the Jornadas and the Ipaqs are the most popular.

Nope...not quite right.

My Handpring Treo 90 Doesn't :) Neither does a few of the other Treo models. Instead, it uses a very nice tumb board, which I find better for entering stuff in. Thats just me though.

There's a program out there for PalmOS called Jot. It takes the place of Graffiti and offers easier recognition. Basically it takes Graffitis modified language and allows you to use the same strokes you would on paper. I have a Clie but I think I should have went with the Palm. It seems that most Third Party Manufacturers only make accessories for them.
