Necxdirect has 70GB Cheetahs for $804 but they arent in stock right now. The 70GB Quantums are $799 but they only have limited stocks.

By 70GB I mean a controller and 2 hard drives. The best/ more popular stuff.

Adaptec or Tekram. Make sure you get the standard 68-pin connector on the drive - NOT the 80-pin SCA version.

Shipping is free at Hypermicro if you mention StorageReview in your order. They have better customer service as well.

Should I go all out on the 15,000 RPM or just get 10,000 RPM? hehe. The price difference seems to be a decent jump.

Adaptec ASC-29160N, Ultra160 LVD SCSI-3, AIC-7892 chipset, 32-bit PCI PnP = $229.00
Seagate Cheetah X15 36LP, 36.7 GB, Ultra160 Wide LVD SCSI-3, 15,000 RPM = $579.00
Seagate Cheetah X15 36LP, 36.7 GB, Ultra160 Wide LVD SCSI-3, 15,000 RPM = $579.00
Total = $1387.00

So that looks about right then? Or the Adaptec 19160?

Er, I think I found the difference, says on Adaptecs site that the 19160 only supports Windows... Gah?

The 19160 only supports Windows (supposedly) while the 29160 series supports Linux, Unix, Netware, OS/2, etc.
That's the only difference.

Ok, Thanks guys. Gonna use this thread as a reference when I get home. My IBM is making scratching noises and pauses after an application closes *sigh*.

Er... Do I need added cooling for these badboys? Like drive encasements or just bay fans?

Ugh. Avoid adaptec if you're planning to go RAID0.

ATTO ExpressPCI UL3S

If you're spending this much and planning to get the fastest hard drives currently available, get a fast controller to go with it.

I'd recommend some sort of cooling. Even though the drives are designed to function properly as hot as they are, it adds a bunch of heat to your case. I just threw my 3 Cheetahs into 3 of these even tho my drives are only 10K.

I don't believe it. skace need I remind you of your ardent support of IDE in that IDE vs. SCSI thread? Perhaps you feel the need for speed now but you still think IDE is a better value?

Rofl, don't go there Carb. If you recall properly - my presence in that argument was based on the value in a price scenario. I can be paying as much as $1500 for this SCSI setup so it is quite obvious I am paying a premium due to the fact that I want the best.

Thanks Bozo, I think I will buy some of those or at least bookmark the site for now.
