Trying to find games that are fun with 2 to 4 friends playing at once. Not MMORPG's, those are just blah.

Thoughts?

I thought maybe Left for Dead would be good, but one guy said he doesn't like it and another guy if afraid of scary things. I think it probably won't work for us.

Definitely Left 4 Dead / Left 4 Dead 2.

Titan Quest is also a lot of fun if you like hack and slash / RPGs.

This might be a bit "old school", but... Diablo 2?
Still kinda fun play occasionally with friends as either an ironman team or hardcore.

I play with 2 friends pretty consistently. Easily our favorite co-op game of the past few years is Borderlands. Probably logged more then 150 hours into several play throughs of this and the DLC's. I'm sure we will revisit it if they release another DLC.

RE5 is fun with 2 people. L4D is obviously awesome with 4 people, and not scary at all, sure it's gory, but it's far from scary. Real time strategy games are fun in groups. My favorite being Age of Empires 2, plus you can play this on netbooks or laptops so no gaming pc needed. Other good ones are Starcraft and Warcraft 3. Other then those we just play lots of Counter Strike.

Left 4 Dead isn't really a scary game. Especially L4D2. It's one of the most fun co-op games I've played, so you should definitely check it out. During a sale, you can get either L4D or L4D2 4 pack for like $5 each or less.

One of the Dota clones (I like League of Legends) or one of the Diablo clones are also fun if you don't want a first person shooter.

My friends and I (2-4 us depending on who can make it) have logged hundreds of hours in Civ IV.

L4D1/2 are also very popular; if your friend is really jumpy then there is no issue with L4D. I'm super jumpy and I rarely jump playing L4D, its more actiony and frantic than scary. If they don't like zombies and blood though I guess that would be a no go.

TF2 is a good go as well but it can be a hassle to all get on the same team.

Can L4D be played on a LAN with only one purchased copy from Steam, i.e. 2 PCs on the same desk both with the same Steam account installed on each? Ideally with the router disconnected from the net, just acting as a LAN router.

(Some on-disk games let you play multiplayer like that with only one disk)

It's also on sale on Steam today, $20.40 for the 4 pack is a pretty decent deal if you ask me.
