Good office chairs for long bouts of computer work?

I had no idea where to put this, and I couldn't find any recent chair threads, so here goes.

I have these stumpy chairs, but they're not very comfortable for long periods of sitting to get shit done and have a smaller back support.

I got hooked on the Herman Miller site, stuff like this chair: http://store.hermanmiller.com/Products/SAYL-Chair

Looks incredible. But any cheap and cheerful recommendations? Or go crazy. Let me know what you swear by.

Also, mods: could we have an official office chair thread?

The Herman Miller chairs are more expensive, but that is because they are covered by a 12 year warranty that is more then just hype. If any part of your HM chair breaks in the first 12 years of ownership they will fix or replace the part or failing that the entire chair.

Edit: Oh, and for me it is the Aeron all the way.

I've been blessed with an Aeron at the office for the last two years. I find it uncomfortable and it makes my legs go numb.

I'm not an expert, but you could be sitting on the wrong size. If I recall at my last job, there were different sizes (Cs,Bs, and As). There were some really small ones that we had for a few folks, but most I think were Cs. And beyond that, they ordered super big chairs for our bigger folks. They weren't Aeron, but they were durable.

I'm just lucky to have nabbed two Aeron chairs for $125 a pop that they had over purchased there. Best money I ever spent on a chair really.

I want a Herman Miller Embody... but I don't have $800-1200 to drop on a chair.

We've got Aerons in the lab (size B), and they're a bit uncomfortable for me. The plastic front lip really digs into my the undersides of my legs, and I'm not a fan of the curved profile of the seat cushion. They're good at forcing you to sit up straight, but I don't think I've ever been comfortable in one.

I have a Steelcase Leap at home. Not as breathable as the Aeron (duh) but I find it far more comfortable. Cushions are quite firm, your butt/tailbone will start hurting if you sit on it for too long.

I got my Leap for $200 off CL

Great suggestions. I'm not in the market for this kind of chair just yet, but I mention it as one kind of benchmark. But I figure given ATOT's resourceful nature, we would have found some cheaper, but just as quality alternative? Or are industrial designers that good?

I don't think it's so much the design of the chair as much as it is the build quality.

If this Leap lasts even twice as long as one of the crap chairs from Staples then I'll be a happy camper. It's not fun working when the faux leather on your chair jabs you in the back 'cause it's all cracked and worn out

I'd hit up Craigslist before I bought retail. Plenty of people looking to offload chairs

I also have an Aeron in the office and a Leap at home and agree with your assessment of both.

The Aeron's plastic front lip (that holds/surrounds the seat) is really annoying at times. It's a bit better with forward tilt, but not by much.

The Leap is more comfortable, but the seat has a bit too much cushion in the front so it has some pressure on the underside of my leg (near the knees). I have thick legs so maybe that's why I don't find both chair as comfortable as others, though the Leap doesn't bother as much.

I bought the Leap during Stealcase's annual sale for about 60% off. I wish I spent more money and added the headrest.

I still love my Hon Pillow-Soft 2090 series high-back chair I got a long time ago (12 years now?) They still make them and sell them just about everywhere... Officemax, Officedepot, Walmart, Staples, hell even Newegg has em. I just wonder if they're still the same quality as they use to be. The foam hasn't broken down at all since day one. Worth sitting in one and finding out I suppose. Plus they're <$350.
