Good Notepad replacement

Ok I am looking for something different from notepad to try out. I love notepad++ but the two biggest gripes I have is that there is no way to set this up to open or save in a default path - i.e. it always starts in its program directory and makes this clunky. The other issue is that I work in txt files a LOT and there is not way to save to a default as txt file. Is there soemthing out there that will do theser two things ANd allow itself to replace notepad.exe ?? Im looking and coming up against some walls here...
Thanks In advance.

Well, I have long used Notepad+.

NP+

I set to always open on a folder of Text Files. That is in the menu system under Options, Preferences, Dialogs, and Open Dialog box as Other. Type in the exact location of the text files, and that becomes the default opening folder. Mine is:

C:\Documents and Settings\name\My Documents\Text Files.

It works for me. You can set that file address to just about anything you want.

Crimson Editor has tabs and lots of useful features.

Notepad2 is a good replacement, fast and small.

Todd,

While NP+ is nice , it does not do tabs and according to the programmer they have no intention on doing so (bummer)

Crimson so far is operating how I want, but do you know of a way to use this to replace notepad.exe in windows ?

Did you just try to rename the application to notepad.exe and storing it in the same location?
