Good news for drunks

8 drinks a week is not a heavy drinker. 8 drinks a DAY, on the other hand...

I better start drinking more so I can be smarter.

8 drinks a week is a heavy drinker eh? I probably don't have many years left in me then..

Jeez. I do 8 drinks a week on the weeks I decide to take it slow. On the normal weeks I probably do 15. On heavier weeks maybe 20-25 a week with the occasional breaking of 30. And I drink a good deal less than the people I know who are heavier drinkers. I don't even know anyone that would qualify as an alcoholic either, I wonder how many they drink a week.

So far I've only had 2 drinks this week. Then again, it's a young week.

Apparently the other effects of alcohol on the brain outweigh any benefits acetate might bring though. When I was drinking heavily I couldn't remember anything or think clearly at any point during the day, even if I wasn't drinking at that moment. I was drinking many times what they consider "heavy drinking" though.

There are no negative effects to the brain from alcohol that I know of UNLESS one is a heavy heavy heavy drinker, like quart a day type, and then it takes a long time to do serious damage. Of course the short term effects are that it makes you stupid while intoxicated, and if your addicted then the withdrawal symptoms could easily explain your memory lapses. It's hard to think under stress.

I'd be more concerned about alcohol's effect on the liver, pancreas, digestive system, etc.

and doesn't this all make perfect sense really?

who's the smartest guy you know? the almost too young looking 50 year old in his office job, never drank a day in his life, never touched an illicit chemical...

or the wise beyond his years man you pass at the convenience store with lines on his face, who's eyes cut right through you as if he can see your soul plain as day with just a glimpse...

?

I think you're romanticizing this guy a bit. More often he's the bleary eyed guy who's there to ask people for money, stare creepily at women, and hate everyone he sees for their youth, health, money, and happiness. Their lives are an inscrutable mystery to him. How can they move about with such purpose? What is it to have activities to do, or people to see? How can there be joy in their lives when there is none in his? His mind is too simple and sodden to comprehend these things, and this is why he hates them.

No, more often its the guy with the clear, sober mind who is watching you so intently, reading your expressions, and listening to the inflection of your voice. He's far more likely to know what's going on in your mind than the wino whose throbbing head and poor short term memory will barely allow him to follow the conversation.

Back when I was in school in the 80s, they said if you drink one drink per day, you are an alcoholic. What?

My great aunt has been drinking one glass of wine with dinner since she was about 30 years old. Now at 94, with a nice house, and smart saving and investing over 60 years... maybe there is something to alcohol that makes you smarter (in moderation of course).

Well ya see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.

In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first.

In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.
