Good news and Bad news

The bad news is that "another one bites the dust". My company will be shutting its doors in a couple months. The major shame here is that we were a profitable and stable subsidiary - - but our monolithic corporate owners wanted to shuffle our customers somewhere else. :disgust: They will lose 1/2 in the process. Can you imagine a more expensive way to get customers?

This has been brewing for a while and is no surprise. I plan to exit the I.T. field and am getting a second bachelor's degree in accounting. Hey, I figure the world can cope with a 60 y/o accountant better than a 60 y/o programmer. (not there yet, but not *too* far off). I've been saving my pennies for this since the last IT depression (Boston, 1992), so it's manageable.

The good news is that I can assimilate a few work machines and have picked up some cheap ones for home ($40 for Dell P2/400 /w monitor + OS). I can do a www.powerleap.com "Tualatin" upgrade to 1GHz+ for another $99+.

Other good news is that the economy looks to be improving somewhat.

Anyway, thanks for listening. I've enjoyed being a part of the RC5, Seti, eccp, and D2OL teams and plan to continue.

I still don't know how the economy can be 'recovering' with out jobs. That's like taking out of the foundation of a building and keep going up.

Anyway. Sorry to hear about your job. I really think IT is at it lowest point right now. :( :( But, I dunno, I use to think it will come back it will have to come back. But, now that I look around and see how things just don't crash like they use to and you can pretty much set something up and forget about it until the next upgrade. Sadly our jobs are going the way side to other countries that will troubleshoot and answer any proramming question over the phone for less then 3 bucks an hour. There just isn't any job secruity anymore. I'm a network admin for the government and they are already looking to cut the IT department (out source) even further. It's sad. Just 5 years ago they were doing everything they could to NOT lose us. Now they are trying harder and harder to get rid of us.

Nothing is being done to save the IT field in the USA. I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing but I am looking at moving on myself. I'm not sure what too yet. I am sure my job will be on the chopping block. Hopefully later then sooner.

Bummer about losing the job, SB. :(

At least you were prepared.

And from the link you gave, Recovery Yes, Jobs No

:(

Still looking for a job since November. I did have an interview for a PC Support person yesterday, competing with 29 others (after making the cut from 200) for half the salary I was making before. *sigh*

Best of luck with the career change! :)

Sorry to hear this bad news but it is good to see you have a plan for your future, as rocky a ride it has been in the IT field I can honestly say I don't blame you!

Good luck!

Also sorry to hear about your company closing the doors at your site. My company is in the process of being purchased and depending on who makes the purchase I could be in your shoes very soon. I sure hope not because my finances are not prepared to be out of work long. Oh well, if it does happen to me it looks like I'll have good company. Good luck with the new career and glad to have you as a TeAmmate! :)
