As far as I can tell, just about everyone in the Australian military are total knobs. They are however, by far the best paid military in the world, and they know it. Even here in Afghanistan they have people trying to recruit UK and American soldiers into the Australian military, and it works since they make approximately double what anyone of similar rank does in our military, plus all the crazy benefits they get. Do the Australian people realize how much you're paying your military?

We have huge problems retaining troops, ffs we can't even keep submarines at sea in any real sense of the word at the moment, and if you think that army pay is good, submariner wages make them look like chickenfeed I understand 😉

It's what happens when you have a Chinese-driven mining boom and people with those skills (heck, people with just about any skills at all, catering and cleaning jobs especially included) can make six figures as a starting salary without batting an eyelid on minesite/out on rigs 🙂

12 hour shifts mean we work much harder here than say in the Gulf or on big domestic US resources projects, or so the unions say, and most of it is fly in/fly out with a roster that gives you something like two weeks on/one week of or some variant of that, or so I understand...
