Talk about a bunch of parochial Americans, look at
Rankor's list. There's barely a foreign film mentioned.
Let alone arguably the best 4 war films ever -
David Lean & Noel Coward's
'In Which We Serve'
The Dam Busters
The Cruel Sea
Laurence Olivier's
'Henry V', need I say more.
Plus as I'm an Aussie here's a couple of classic Aussie war films.
Peter Weir's
'Gallipoli', not much to say except see it, its about Winston Churchills disastrous Dardenelles campaign.
Charles Chauvel's
'The 40000 Horsmen' about the last great succesful cavalry charge - The storming of the Turkish Fortress of Beersheba by the Australian Lighthorse During WWI. It was made in 1941, while Australian troops were besieged by the Akrika Korps at Tobruk, so its a bit of a propaganda peice. Another film about Beersheba
'The Lighthorsemen', made in 1987 is much more historically accurate & was filmed by the Acadamy Award winning Australian cinematographer Dean Semler (actually it was my dad who trained him, back in the 70's), plus has what the critics consider to be the best cinematic cavalry charge of modern filmaking.
Also I feel I should mention
'Odd Angry Shot', as I think its the only Aussie film about the 'diggers' in Vietnam.
I also feel I must mention another British film, James Clavell'S
'The Last Valley, starring Michael Caine & Omar Shariff, its just a fantastic, if little known film about the 30 years war.
Oh & we mustn't forget
'Das Boote'
That'l do for now.
