good lord, dehumidifiers are expensive!

$200 is not too bad for what is basically a small portable air conditioner.

I run one during the summer, though really I'm not sure if it's all that necessary, especially since I got my weeping tiles/seal redone. I'd have to put some humidity sensors and monitor humidity levels around the house/basement and see how it is with or without.

I plan to get central air eventually so that will lower the humidity anyway. Will probably make a big difference when I actually insulate my basement too.
 
Yeah, I have one running nonstop in my basement and it runs my electric up to $100/month.

Can't wait for my new hybrid hot water heater to be installed. It includes a condensing line and will basically perform double duty as a hot water heater and a dehumidifier.

Don't you guys get like 8 days of summer up there? Seems like a huge cost for little use.
 
Well, why the hell do you want to dehumidify the air? My central HVAC has an add-on unit that ADDS humidity to the air. 😛

Huh? That's typically for the furnace side during the winter. It's not adding water back in during the summer, at least around here (midwest).

For the basement. Otherwise it will get damp and can become a spawning area for mold and strange smells.

I have an 40 pint that I bought a couple of years ago, it works decently well, and keeps the air in the basement nice and dry.

When the AC is on, the dehumidifier is not necessary for me, but, when it's niceish out, and the AC is not on, I run that sucker nonstop.
 
i wish there was a better way too. up here in wisconsin we have an old basement block wall that just pours out moisture from the ground behind it. the last cabin burned down because a dehumidifier overheated. i hate the damn things, but there isnt much choice but to use them.

they are expensive to run too 🙁
 
I have an LG I bought at Home Depot. It runs in my basement (1,000'ish s/f) 24/7. My electric bill this month was around $105.

I need to build some kind of drain for it...

whats it normally? that doesnt sound like a high bill in any case.

there should be a drain for your furnace... just run a hose to that. or your sump pump..
 
I bought a Fridgedare one for under $200 for my basement and it wasn't draining out of the hose....so they gave me money back and told me to keep it.

It works, just have to empty out the water....which I never do....so I don't use it....but I might one day.

Yup, basement. I think mine was a couple hundred bucks. Pulls gallons out of the air like magic. House Atredies u jelly? :awe:

I believe I have a Fridgeaire as well. It would not drain out the hose like yours. I removed the back wheels so that it was angled backwards and then it started to drain from the hose. You might want to give that a try.

Is it really that dry up there? I run a dehumidifier, for reasons which are obvious based on my location.

My dehumidifier had a drain outlet that, according to internet reviews, often did not work. I bought it anyway, but the drain indeed often stopped working. The tank would fill, then the dehumidifier would turn off.

I drilled a hole in the holding tank and attached a valve and a tube going to a floor drain. Problem solved.
 
I have one and it runs often if not most of the time in fact. In the basement otherwise the air becomes like a dish tank. Everyone around here uses one.

I tried that. Fridgeaire made me try all kinds of things before the refund....
 
Yeah, they're expensive.

When I bought my house it was empty except for a nice, new dehumidifier in the basement. I asked whether it would stay and was assured that it would.

Come closing time I didn't do the final walk through I had been there the night before and everything was in order, and I had some work to do the morning before the close. After getting the keys I went back that afternoon and the thing was gone. I think they had someone pick it up while we were closing. But I didn't press the issue because I didn't figure they were that expensive, and I didn't know how much I would need it.

Wrong I was: as best as I can tell the model they had there was probably $500.
