good large tablets

what are some good large tablets (larger than 7") and how is your experience with them and would you recommend buying it?

Ipad, Samsung note, Samsung tab 2?

i am looking to buy 1 within a month for personal use for just general web browsing, movie watching, email, etc

I'm an Android fan that owns an iPad 3 and I love it despite it's limitations...

Web browsing is great. I do like the 4:3 aspect ratio of the screen for web browsing because browsing looks great in either landscape or portrait. The retina display produces very clean text.

The aspect ratio not as great for video watching, but the 9.7 inch screen is still be enough that videos look good and the single speaker produces loud and clear audio.

I'm pretty happy with all the tablet optimized apps on the iPad as well.

If I didn't own this iPad 3, I'd probably buy a TF700 though. That looks like great.

Xoom was nice actually, but unless they moved to 4.0 I wouldnt recommend it. Actually, the new 8.9 inch Kindle Fire is nice for the money. But you'd have to put up with ads & stuff.

I picked up an Asus Infinity a week ago, its a damn nice tablet. And should be getting a Jelly Bean update with in the next few days, if Asus is to be believed.

On the GTab 2 models, they're OMAP4 powered. Laggy with TouchWiz. They are, however, well built and have sd slots. The Note 10.1, yuck. Its thick, heavy, and made of the cheapest plastic imaginable. Despite the Exynos 4412, its also laggy. I was not impressed with the Note 10.1, and neither were pretty much all reviews. Android Police really ripped it a new one.

If you're interested in the forked Android versions from Amazon and B&N, then it might be worth waiting a little longer than a month for the ~9in Fire HD and Nook HD+ to arrive. But, the Fire HD available now though seems to be a mess on the software side.

I would avoid the Tab 2s just due to their inferior hardware. The Note 10.1 has the best hardware and it's the closest to being "smooth", but it's still overpriced. For the same price you could look at the Asus Transformers which I would recommend. Even if you never spring for the keyboard dock (which IMO is a great accessory if you're on forums a lot like me) it's one of the best Android tablets out there. Keep in mind there's the Transformer Infinity (T700), TF300, and TF201. All are pretty smooth and nice hardware wise, but the Infinity has the nicer 1080p screen and isn't that much more expensive than the rest. And the numbering system doesn't make sense... hardware wise from best to worst: TF700>TF201>TF300

Right now I would be split between a Transformer and iPad 3. Personally I go with Android because that's what I have phone wise, but the ipads are still nice if you're not tied to an app store already. You can't beat them for accessory support either, and you can get some pretty decent keyboard cases that'll come close to the Transformer experience without the extra battery boost.

The transformer is nice but not perfect; for me the ipad was not an option due to lack of sd/micro-sd slot.

Never seen but some folks like the acer (it too is 1080p and tegra 3).

My biggest complaint with the transformer is it seems to have a bit of lag under moderate i/o load (like downloading aps or a lot of web pages in parallel) which my other tablet do not seem to have so I have no doubt the ipad is smoother (but as i noted for myself it is useless for my usage without the sd slot).

I'm not really a fan of tegra 3 and kind of hope the andriod tablet makers switch to ti or qualcom processor (omap or sx (s4 pro currently).

No, it is not smooth. Its extremely laggy. Home screens chug, menu's jitter, and your fingers leave indentations on the cheap plastic. Its not a 500 dollar tablet.

TF700 has a 1920x1200 screen. 🙂

And the TF201 and TF300 are boast the same Tegra 3 clocks, RAM, etc. But the TF300 has a plastic chassis, so its WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth actually work. 😛

I got a refurbished Toshiba Thrive. It's kinda slow but has actual usb and hdmi ports.. so sometimes I output the display to the TV. 10.1 screen. paid $205 All in all, good deal

The Galaxy Note 10.1 is thinner than the ipad and lighter and nobody complains about the weight and size of the iPad. So I dunno where you pulled the information from. It is not laggy and in fact I have used it side by side with the Asus Infinity and the Galaxy was much more snappy. One simple reason, the Asus tablet has very slow I/O speeds so reading off the SD card is very slow. In fact a video loaded on both would literally lag like you were getting fps drops on a slow PC trying to play Crysis.

To me the Note is the better experience even with the smaller screen but the Asus is nicer for reading lots of text. Apparently the Asus also has a few issues with force closing apps and the like. GPS issues, WiFI drop outs etc.

From my perspective the Note 10.1 might not have the fancy new HD screen but it just works plain better out of the box. Also Asus is attempting to block NVflash while you have almost no problem rooting and customizing your experience on the Note 10.1.

Too many people are wowed by the specs of the Asus Infinity and don't do enough research on the various forums to see what people are saying. There's build quality issues and lots of data drops etc. I was considering one but might forget it.

In all honesty if you are not in need of Flash player and you could live without the SD card slot, the Apple Tablets are the best experiences. This is because the OS and all the apps are tailored to the device. The downside is the OS is locked down and you're tied to iTunes.

Should also add that everything changes quickly with new firmware and app updates. Issues I see may never show up when you update.

The one thing that turns me off the asus infinity is the possibility of issues down the line. One video review was comparing it to the note 10.1 and during the review the screen developed two lines running horizontally and nothing fixed it. Restart didn't remove it. Looks like a physical product issue. They said it was 3 months old and was perfectly fine until then but that means dealing with asus support cause retail has 30day return policy. That might be a bad experience.
