Good Karma For $5

I found $5 today on a counter when I was getting my morning coffee. I turned it over to the counterstaff in case someone came looking for it.

I have no expectation of the person ever getting their $5 back and it probably ended up in the pockets for the couterstaff, but I got to go to work today with a clear conscience and the knowledge that I have a little extra good karma to take with me through life?

So, the million dollar question: Do you keep the money?

i found a 20 the other day floating around in the handwash and kept it, theres no way to find its owner. the girls up front are supposed to empty ALL pockets before items are cleaned to ensure no inkpens, makeup, candy, gum, or other items damage any clothing, but inevitably something gets missed every now and again.

usually its a peppermint or a cough drop, maybe once a year an ink pen or some lipstick. spare change isnt unusual (a few pieces get caught in a button-trap almost daily) but cash is unusual. i dont feel guilty about it, i sure as hell clean out MY pockets before i do my cleaning, and anyone who doesnt is asking to lose something; though anything that we do find and can pin it to a specific customer has the items returned.

You shoud have taken that $5 and buy lottery tickets. Your karma can be judge if you win any money. If you strike it rich (good karma), then you can come back to the coffee shop as a millionaire to share your wealth. And if you didn't share your wealth at that coffee shop, that means that bad karma will follow you from that point on.

Given the fact that someone returned my wife's purse, which I misplaced at Target a few days back, in tact at the customer service desk, I would have to return the favor to someone else that lost thier belonging.

I would look around first to see if anyone more than likely dropped the money, but after that, mehhh....

If there was some way to identify whose money it is, it would find its rightful owner.

id return a belonging, we have a box full of belongings behind the front counter.

but cash? you cant up and ask someone if they lost cash, christ, everyone suddenly lost cash!

I found a $50 bill on the floor of a 24hour laundromat. I kept it. Why? Well, Karma for me is so one-sided that when i die, there's an express elevator for me that'll take me right next to Satan's throne.

An incident from years ago is why I will always try to return lost money, although there are times it's simply not possible.

I found a wad of six $20s on the floor of a supermarket. I was pretty poor at the time (and I lived in a rundown neighborhood) and I could have really used that money. But for some reason, before I left the store, I decided I'd walk the store a little and see if anyone was clearly looking for lost money. Two aisles over I saw an obviously distraught and shabbily dressed woman with two little kids and a cart full of groceries frantically looking through her purse and around the floor. I watched a bit and saw her start going down the aisle looking all over the floor.

I asked her casually if she lost anything and she looked up crying, saying she lost her grocery money. I said I found some, how much was it? She knew it was $120 in twenties. I gave it back and she thanked me profusely, saying that it was all the money she had for food until the end of the month. After rummaging in her purse she tried to give me $3 but I declined. I glanced in her cart as I passed and there was no crap at all. Ground meat, baby food, generic canned vegetables, etc.

Yeah, I could have used the money, but I didn't need it as bad as she did. That's when I decided I'd always try to return something I found. If you ever get the chance to make someone feel as good as she did that day, I hope you take it.
