Fiancee filled out her taxes with Turbotax's online edition.

When she finished her federal, it automatically took her through a Florida State Income Tax questionare, all of which she answered no for (obviously, no state income tax in FL). There was no option to skip the state questions, i was sitting in the room at the time.

Nevertheless, she gets to the end and is about to pay to submit, sure enough an additional $24 for using their State program.

Good job Turbotax.

Took 45 mins on the phone with those boogers to get them to fix the bill before she paid.

n/m, I haven't used their online version so I can't comment. But I know with the CD version, you can easily bypass the state by clicking No Thanks.

They may have a default Next button to start the State return.

If so, then one has to explicity select the Skip option.

On another note; once you start into a State program; you can not back out and try to override the mistake.

On the online edition, there was no Skip button at that point, only a next button.

Hm... I used TurboTax online, and I'm approximately 98% certain you can use it to just file federal taxes.

Taxcut sent me a free copy in the mail this year for not using them last year. Been using Turbotax for years, only used Taxcut the year Intuit had that crappy single computer copy protection crap.

Buying the software is so cheap, I don't know why anyone would struggle through going through the online method. Plus, I think I'd rather have my financial records on my own PC than on someone else's server.

This week you can get TaxCut for $24.99 at OM, plus a $15 gift card (net cost $10). And it includes one state version and free Federal e-file.

i just did my taxes and i had the same problem where they tried to bill me for state even though i didnt submit it. i backtracked a little bit and figured out how you can skip state taxes and not get charged for the submission.

when you are at the state tax window:

make sure you have no states entered and just click "done with state"
