as i'm preparing to get laid off, just curious to see what your thoughts are on in terms of good industries to be looking at...

i'm currently in the investment industry. so, yeah, we got burned and i'm expecting our IT presence to be significantly reduced as our clients are pushing their money into money market and savings accounts 🙁.

time to start poisoning and/or framing co-workers. make it a new-years resolution.

Healthcare. The local wanted pages on Sundays have the largest section on healthcare or related industries. RN/PA/DON/PT/ect are always in demand.

I never heard of anyone in the healthcare field got lay off or couldn't find a job.

Utilities. The need for electricity is not going to diminish any time soon.

this although we are expecting a salary freeze soon.
I'm just a lowly I&C guy, I work for a union and my pay goes up every year per the contract. This contract is good through 2013. Plus, I have one more pay grade I can get promoted to, I'll get that one at my six month anniversary on the job.

ps - I make more than most of the managers here (minus the PM of course).

It's generally very difficult to get into this industry w/o prior health care experience <insert catch-22 joke>, but this is a good recommendation.

I turned down a programming job for one of the largest software companies for health care so I could move near family. Afraid it will catch up to me...

Healthcare IT is huge, but it's very specialized and it can be hard to really get entry into the market. We do a lot in healthcare with respect to governance, data warehousing, revenue management, etc.

If I were to offer any specific recommendations for healthcare, I'd say concentrate on knowing data. Initially that sounds silly to most people, but healthcare companies deal with a tremendous amount of data. This includes everything from specific formats (HL7, EDI) to knowing how to work with it (ETL, regular expressions perhaps, etc.) and all the warehousing tools (SSIS, Data Junction and a lot of others).

Ding Ding Ding ^^^^^ It's good to know some AS400 as well.... as I'm still trying to learn this shit... grr..
