My comp temps were messed, 62C and 50C for hard drive...so I opened the case and removed some wires inside I don't use(like the DVD and floppy drive) for better air flow...now I keep the case open, temps dropped to 48C and 41C on harddrive.....is there anything bad that can happen if the side panel of the case stays open exposing the inside?

The main downside is it allows more dust and such in... With decent airflow, you really don't need it off. That said, I leave mine off now until my new Panaflos come in! The stock 120mm fans aren't cutting it...

Can't hurt. Mine was locking up in BF2 (Case has basically no front intake, so no real airflow), so I took off the side panel, temps nosedived, and I put it back when I'm not playing. No real downside.

Funny story, we got a new kitten and he just about took his nose off in my xp-90 a few days ago... He climbed up my power cable behind my desk and into the case while I was busy playing CS:S... He is no longer allowed in my room.

And rightfully so!! You should have denied him kitty biscuits for 3 weeks for that.

I have never seen my hand hit the power switch (on the PSU) so fast. My case is facing away from me (since My mouse barely reaches my pad) so I didn't see him until I heard him meow...

Lol! Sounds like something my new kitten would do... and I always fear he will because my case is WIDE OPEN!

I will be able to put the side back on once my new fans come in (Hopefully monday). Then again, I change something every other day, soit may be a pian opening and closing it all the time...

You dont have to have it latch on necessarily, jus have it up real close to it so not so much dust/hair/kitten gets in it .. like lay it vertically next to it as if it were latched on except not :p

I would say that a case has a good purpose. To protect the valuable insides. With a good case you should have adequate cooling. If it's a good case the airflow should primarily move over the cpu and the power transistors. Not only does the case protect your "goods" from dust, but also from physical disturbance, liquids, and nosey pets. There is also a lot of voltage running around in there. I really should remember that when constantly tinkering with it! :p If you have to leave your case open you have a case problem, not necessarily a system problem.
