Good hsf for a P4?

What's a good hsf combo for a P4 that can be used while overclocking? I was thinking about the Northwood 1.6a to overclock and want a suitable hsf.
Can you use most Socket A coolers on a P4?
 
You cannot use any socket A heatsink on a P4. Check out the swiftech MCX478 or the new Alpha thats coming out. The retail heatsink is great for most people though. It has been used all the way up to 2.5GHz overclocks with reasonable tempuratures.

All Intel P4 Northwoods ship retail (good luck finding an OEM) and come with the heatsink and fan for the Socket 478.
 
Besides the AVC Sunflower, the Thermaltake Volcano 478 seems to be the best. The Sunflower has about a 3 degrees C advantage at full load on the Thermaltake, but the Thermaltake is considerably more quiet (just slightly louder than the P4 stock HSF, and about 6 deg celsius cooler than the P4 HSF at full load). So, for best performance, go with the sunflower. For good performance and relative quiet, go for the Volcano. Both the Thermaltake Volcano and the AVC Sunflower are affordable. You can get either for less than 20 bucks shipped, online.
 
how quiet is the stock hs/f? does it compare well with the quieter socket A hsf combos like alpha 8045+panaflo ?
 
Stick with the stock HSF. This thing works just fine, even with OC to 2400Mhz. No sense spending extra dough for only a few degrees improvement.
 
Actually, the best heatsink for the P4 is not the Swiftech MCX478 anymore....

It's the just-released Alpha PAL8942, available for $39 from 2Cooltek and Plycon. Even with a completely silent 20cfm can, it still outperforms the AVC Sunflower and stock Intel heatsink by a good margin. With a higher CFM fan, it outperforms the Swiftech MCX478 by 10-15%, based solely on their respective C/W ratings.
